Wireless networking between iMac and Surface Pro

I want to use a Surface Pro tablet to import photos from an SD card, then I want to review the photos in Lightroom, delete the ones I don't want, and eventually get the photos off the Surface Pro and on to an external drive connected to my iMac. I currently have my iMac set up for file sharing and do this with my other Macs.

1. Is there an easy way to use the Surface Pro to copy the files from it to the drive connected to the iMac through my wireless home network?
2. Does this introduce any performance issues, or security concerns?

If you have a drive set up to share over your through System Preferences » Sharing with SMB enabled, then you should be able to access this on a Windows machine. You'll likely be able to find your computer under Network in File Explorer on the Surface Pro, and just need to enter your appropriate credentials to connect. If not, you can map it like any other network drive in Windows (File Explorer » This PC » Computer » Map Network Drive).

The only concern would be that another device would have access to your shared files, so make sure you have a good anti-malware software installed on the Surface Pro.

After transferring files from the Mac to the Surface Pro, is there some way to disconnect from the Mac?

To disconnect from the mapped drive, you can either right-click it in the sidebar of File Explorer and choose "Disconnect", or you can also go to File Explorer » This PC » Map network drive » Disconnect network drive.
