Wireless question

I thought I posted this last night but it looks like I never hit enter or something.

Anyway, here is my question. I just got an 20" intel iMac on Saturday. All went well on start up but it could not connect to the internet wirelessly.

It found my wireless router, but it gave me an error saying it could not connect. Do I have to buy an airport express station, then hook that up to my router in order for me to connect without any cables, I hope not cuz that's what another $130 bucks!

BTW, I got my uncle to 'switch' last fall, my dad last week (17" intel iMac) and myself this past weekend. My work is not done, I'm sick of babysitting my aunts/uncles/cousins Windows computers. I find myself reinstalling windows for them cuz of virus/trojans/spyware every couple of months, gets old after a while.

Any ideas with my original question?

No, the iMac will work with any wireless router. Try checking to see if you have some sort of wireless security enabled.

I'm not really up to speed with wireless networking and stuff so I have never put any kind of security features into my router, my windows HTPC computer connects wirelessly right away without any issues.

Yeah I find myself forgetting this from time to time as well. If you have WEP encryption enabled make sure you choose the right level of encryption (64bit or 128bit). It should be the same as what you selected when setting up the security on your router. If you can't figure out what it is, just try the password on each of the different encryption options that it gives you when you attempt to connect.

Also, you may have MAC filtering enabled which will cause you router to reject your new imac. You can also check this through your router's admin setup (check your manual for the ip-address you need to enter to get there). If it is enabled, just add you new imac's MAC address to the list, and you're good to go.

Connect your mac to the router using an ethernet cable, after resetting the router (remember ip/dhcp etc).
I love router resets!

Configure the router using the mac.
There is no reason why the router won't work with the mac, all things WiFi should be compatible with airport.
