Wireless router... How is this one?

I'm one of the "at them" people. ^^;;;

Though plenty of people seem to have no issues with Linksys routers, I have nothing but trouble with them (I've got 3). Could never maintain a steady wireless connection with them and any of my devices (couple of PCs, MBP, PS3, etc.), even at very short distances.

I'm loving the D-Link DIR-655, though. *shrug*

Yeah, that's the thing, though. Most of the other D-Link routers (besides the DIR-655) are rather spotty according to the user reviews I've seen. I never thought I'd purchase a D-Link product, but after seeing the reviews on the 655, I had to give it a shot. And hey - it totally owns my Linksys routers for wireless stability, not to mention the fact that it's got one of the best draft-N implementations on the market.

all you need is a dd-wrt compatible modem. i think that one may be, at least certain revisions
 
if you're interested, i have a rock solid wrt-54gs that's already got the latest version of dd-wrt installed on it.

i was planning on using it as a wds node but the size of my current apartment makes it somewhat pointless considering the amazing coverage from a single unit.

I heard this is the best router for linksys.. But I dont have a good experience with the WRT54GS version .5, it always drop the internet connections and need to restart.. sometimes once a weeks, sometimes 5-10 times an hour...
I heard the GL still runs on Linux which is much better than mine..
 
wrt54gl is sweet. just make sure to run dd-wrt on it :)

Had a bunch of routers before it, this one is the greatest (well, it would be nice if there was 802.11n and GigE too) in my opinion.
 
While there are plenty of scientists who would disagree (just as there are plenty who would argue that there is no such thing as man-triggered global warming), you might want to take a look at this...

i should've been more clear.

i have an EXTRA wrt54tgs with dd-wrt already installed.

as far as reliability, i think the only versions that've really had a lot of complaints were the vxworks-based versions. any version that was running linux originally (2.1 and prior, iirc) was perfectly stable.

there is even a convoluted way you can re-flash the vxworks ones to run dd-wrt (linux) and then they run just as good as the others.

the linksys hardware is all good. if you're lucky, you can find a unit with double memory (32MB RAM & 8MB flash, both of mine are) and you can use the more robust versions of dd-wrt (with vpn, etc).

the version 2.0 and 2.1 hardware is the "good stuff".

i'd prefer those over the wrt54gl since the gl only has 16mb of RAM and 4MB of flash.

the wrtsl54gs looks like an interesting piece of hardware, but i've never used one.

That is the case, but I've found that the best deals are usually only online, which means you don't necessarily get to choose which version of the wrt54g you want. And sometimes it's really difficult to find the version you want even in a retail store.

The wrt54gl lets you get a good wrt54g that isn't crippled like the later versions of the wrt54g were without the hassle of finding it.

It's really not like 4mb flash memory is gonna kill you. All the GLs have 16mb ram, just like most of the older wrt54g's.

yeah.. that was the reason i was offering my extra one up.. it's one of the good ones. :)
