Wireless Router

I need a router for my new MBP and I saw the one on Apple but I don't really want to pay $200 unless that is the only one that will work with it. What routers do yall use and if you have any links to good ones I would really like that.

A linksys wireless G router would be more than fine. I've had good experiences with this router with my Mac. They retail for anywhere between $79.00 and $99.00CAN.

Since the wireless is built into my computer, all I have to do is plug the cable modem in and install the software on the computer and it should work, am I right?

You need to install the cable modem, then connect a wireless router to it (assuming that the cable modem itself doesn't have a wireless router built in... I haven't heard of any that do). The wireless router could be a "pure" one, like the AirPort Express, or a wired/wireless combo, like the highly recommended Linksys WRT54G.

In no event do you need to install software on your Mac to communicate with the wireless router, but you'll likely need to set up some options in System Preferences...->Network->"Show: Airport".

That's more or less it! If you're located in the US, I may have a Linksys wireless B router or an older Airport base station that I would be willing to let go for less than $80.

i can second this. we've been using a linksys router for a while now (on a network with both macs and pcs) and it's worked terrifically.

When I purchased my linksys router, I didn't need to install any software to connect to it wirelessly. The mac immediately recognized the network and I joined it immediately. You'll want to make sure to follow the directions of your router to make your connection secure but, otherwise, you won't require to do anything to get on the Internet.

Just so we're clear, your cable modem will hook up to your wireless router. Your computer, via the wireless card, will connect to the router.

With my cable modem, we just got the new one about a week ago and there is no software to install, we just connect the cable line and run the wires to the computer and it works. With my dell laptop I had a wireless card and then in the office we had the modem with a router and I had to install some software then for the wireless card. Right now I have the modem connected directly to my dell laptop because the other computer is messed up and I didn't install any software on this one.

I have the apple airport express. Maybe a little costly but the signal is great and I love the wireless printing and airtunes. Its also very easy to travel with.
Just my opinion.

When I was in the market for a WiFi router i did a bit of online research. There were a lot of negative responses for linksys Routers. So I decided to go for Netgear WGR 614v5. Works like a charm. Never had a problem. But I m not saying that Linksys is bad or anything. I have not even used one. Just that the netgear is working really fine(it`s been about 7 monts now) and you can consider it as an option.

I am running a Linksys wireless router that I had to set up to ensure it worked with my cable modem. Once that is done and the wireless is turned on, with security, The airport card will automatically detect the network. You will have to input the wep key in the networks/airport section but thats it. You only have to put software on the machine if you are using their wireless card. I used to have a laptop PC with a linksys card that need software installed on the computer. Mainly drivers and such.

Isn't Mac GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT?

I'd say go with the Linksys WRT54G. I just picked one up this past weekend and it works great. It allows me to have both wired (for desktop PC) and wireless (for Macbook) access to the internet. The setup was a cinch, and the range is also great. Check out Best Buy. I picked mine up there for $59.99.

We've been using a Linksys WRT54G for the past three years and we haven't had any problems with it, right now I'm connected on the wireless and two computers are wired.
