I want to copy the Movies folder in iTunes to a wireless storage device so my MBP can remain untethered and ATV will always have movie access.

How can this be done for a reasonable price?

Basically, it can't.

This is the big issue, to my mind, with the AppleTV in that you need a mac or PC always on to access a large library. However this is Apple's way, they don't want you to use your own (possibly pirated) films, they want you to rent them off Apple or download them so they get a cut of the profit.

The best route if you want to do that is jailbreak your AppleTV, I think you can then access a network drive.

I'm really hoping that apple address this with the rumoured new airport base stations. Before I got the atv2 I was using a ps3 as my media playback device and loved the DLNA support for playback from NAS drives.

This....

Many NAS devices also have an iTunes server compatibility. You can use your jailbroken :apple:TV with your NAS with your computer off and you can still use the NAS with iTunes when your computer is up and running. Works especially well if you have multiple machines in the house with iTunes too.

Note that no NAS solution will play iTunes DRM media. You can only play those videos outside the computer by Home Sharing from iTunes (or an iPhone/iPad/iPod).

You might find out that Apple's WWDC announcement will solve your problem! In the meantime, a Mac Mini without monitor and keyboard can do what you want and it sips power.
