My wife has an eMac G3.
I would like to set her computer on my linksys router.
Can I use an USB network card from linksys?
Or I absolutely need to use Airpot Wireless?

Thanks

Sure, as long as there are Mac drivers available from Linksys, the 3rd party card should work fine.

You mean imac right?
Anyways, you dont need to use apples airport card to access a wireless network. You can use any usb wifi adapter as long as its mac compatible.

As laser hinted to, there is no such thing as an eMac G3

Introduced in April 2002, the eMac brought G4 power and a 17 inch monitor to the familiar iMac form factor. Based on the same architecture as the flat panel iMac, the eMac was initially available only for educational markets. It shipped in two configurations: a 32x CD-ROM model for $999, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM model for $1199.

If you are going to get a USB adapter, I recommend the DWL-122 from D-Link as it has been a stable solution for my friends iMac G3 SE.

Be very careful here. I have heard the drivers are very problematic.

new question

Hi guys, I'm in the uk

I've got a G5 1.8 and want to go wireles as I'm trailing an E-Net cable accross the living room floor and have a baby coming soon.

Could you guys recommend a wireless router to use with NTL Broadband and a usb adaptor (I didnt get airport installed in my machine when I ordered it last year).

Many thanks guys and happy holidays

it may be more expensive, but I'd still go with an Airport card. I recently put one in my own G5, it couldn't have been easier.

I don't have any experience with routers though, so I won't make comment on that.

yeah, exactly. One Os update, and the thing could be broken. Something doesn't work right, good luck waiting for a driver update. I don't like USB adaptors. USB was never meant for networking.

A better solution is an ethernet based adaptor. linksys, belkin, dlink and macsense all make them. The macsense one even gets its power from the computer (via a USB cable, which isn't used for the networking side of it). Ethernet based adaptors are OS independent and don't require drivers. So there's no extra software to install. I recommend them voer USb adaptors every time.

Thanks for all the answers... and yes I did a typo! My wife has a iMac G3.

Other thank a d-link DWL-122...any other recommendation? I was reading elsewhere that the drivers are not very good... and it could crash the system.

When you talk about ethernet based adaptor, would you have a model that you could give as an example?

Thanks

There is an airport card adapter for the iMac G3 and it takes the old time original Airport cards -- but maybe you already know this. I've been sort of thinking about this for my mom's iMac but the wires out of her machine are not terrible.

Didn't see this earlier. I use a link sys WET11, and there is the linksys WET54, belkin and dlink make similar devices. macsense makes one too that gets its power through USB but connects through ethernet, which is pretty cool.

I hadn't realized that original AirPort cards had gone up so much in price. These folks sell both the AP card and the adapter for iMac G3s: http://www.macwireless.com/html/products/11g_11b_cards/airportcard.php

However, when I bought one from them in the middle of last year, it was only $90 or so.

The good news is that if you go this route and decide to scrap the iMac at some point, you can take the AP card out and re-sell it for a decent return on your investment.

I use a Linksys Wireless Ethernet Bridge to make the kids iMac wireless. I tried the DLink usb adapter that someone mentioned here but with 10.3.8 + it was nothing but hassle. The ethernet bridge was simple to install and works without any drivers on the mac. Model # is WET54G, I would highly recommend this over any 3rd party usb device.
