I have a MBP, and plan to take long trip. Some motels have T-Mobile wireless. Is this something I can hook into? On the Apple discussions board, somebody posted that the Airport Extreme can double as a modem. How so?

Assuming that I can hook up wireless to T-Mobile (or other wireless network), does the MBP automatically find the nearest wireless network or do I have to do something to find that network?

When I get to an overnite where there is no internet access, what are my options othere than finding a local wireless access point?

Thanks for the help!

what is a MBP?

Assuming you are talking about an apple computer that has wireless with default config they will connect to a hotspot automatically. Usually hotspot that are pay will come with a web page when the browser is opened after connection is made. Different places will have different services. Some hotels and coffee shops offer free wifi. You can probably connect to a residential or unsecured wifi for free, however, probably not from a hotel room. If you are that needy for internet in the hotel, most good hotels offer ethernet service for a fee or for free.

please don't worry about using the airport extreme as a modem. it isn't practical for your situation.

MBP = MacBook Pro.
Yep. That's what it is = MacBook Pro. I'll be spending a few days in the Boston area, so maybe I'll get a chance to visit an Apple store. Maybe I'll have to buy one of those USB $50 modems. Sure hope not.

Instead of lugging around an Airport Extreme, get an Apple USB Modem. It's $49, but I'm sure you could find one cheaper on ebay.

If you find yourself in a hotel with no hi-speed but they do offer a dataport, just grab yourself an AOL Free Trial disc that has 1000 hours. I've done that before, it's dial-up but at least you're connected.
