Hi Forum,

I want to install Wireshark on OS 10.8, which is possible according to the developers. Wireshark uses X11, which in mountain lion means getting the xquartz install. So, I installed xquartz and then Wireshark. But everytime I want to launch the app it keeps displaying the message the x11 is no longer included and that i should install xquartz.

Even if I launch xquartz and type open /Applications/Wireshark.app it keeps giving me the message. (This action was about the only "solution" that my online search provided me.)

Anyone got any tips? Thank you

That's because you installed Xquartz the wrong way around. You need to follow the dialog you get when you start an X11 app. If you don't install it this way then you'll keep getting the dialog. If you do then the X11.app in /Applications/Utilities will be deleted and replaced by Xquartz.app. I bumped into the same problem because I upgraded to Xquartz before opening any X11 app and was bugged continuously by that dialog. After simply following the dialog it was resolved.

RE: MacPorts wireshark...

Hi,

You don't say exactly how you installed wireshark, but it appears that you did so from the wireshark.org web site. I thought I'd mention that you can also install wireshark from MacPorts and from Fink, and when you install it from these systems then X11 is automatically taken care of for you. Just thought I'd mention this since MacPorts and Fink have other network sniffing tools that you might find useful.

Regards,
Switon
