With my new iMac, Mountain Lion keeps dropping my network shares

About 10 days ago I purchased a new 2012 i7 based iMac to replace a late 2009 model that I had. I restored my user data via Time Machine with Migration Assistant. Everything is working great other than one thing that has me somewhat baffled.

For years now I have been using a script that runs at system startup to map a bunch of SMB shares on my Synology box. This was working fine with the previous Mac which was also running Mountain Lion. Somehow now, with nothing else changed that I am aware of, my Mac is of its own accord disconnecting these shares. After disconnection, I can re-run the script and everything maps back up, for a while... then a day or less later, the shares are gone.

This is really playing havoc with things that I do, as all of my media and other large files sit on these network shares and many applications like Lightroom, iTunes, etc, points directly to these volumes.

Does anyone have any idea of what I can do to fix this?

Seems like your internet connection might be dropping out

If you loose network connection for a little bit, the shares disappear. With AFP shares I believe they auto connect, maybe not with SMBs

I don't think that the network is dropping. The problem only seems to occur when the Mac goes to sleep. Sometimes after waking it from sleep, the SMB shares are missing and I have to remount them.

I will have to investigate if there is any way to make the SMB shares persistent, but I've never had trouble with any of my previous Macs dropping the shares.

I also just got the ********* support I've ever received from Apple. After convincing the front line technician to bump me up to 2nd level support the 2nd level support "engineer" told me they don't support SMB shares. Really really unbelievable.

You can't repair a network volume. There's nothing wrong with the share, all of the other devices in the home see those shares just fine... it's just the new iMac that is having trouble.

WiFi?

Oh I forgot to ask, WiFi or Ethernet?

Cause I have a similar problem. With my MacBook 17" 2011, when I get a drop in WiFi, the Popup for my AFPs, gives me the "Disconnect" "Ignore" options, I just click "Ignore", and then when my WiFi kicks back in, the shares are online.

But if you are on ethernet, yeah I don't what that's about...

I have a simliar problem in a domain environment. I have 3 mapped network drives on a brand new iMac and they work just fine on initial login but eventually drop. Instead of a login script I added the volumes to Startup Items in the Users CP. This is not a work-stopper since I showed the user how to reconnect the shares but it certainly is annoying. And since one of our 3-letter overlords is now thinking he might need a Mac (hell no), it will be a work-stopper if he gets one.

I have possibly found a workaround achieved by changing a couple of things. First, I set a static ip on the iMac, second I turned off the energy setting for network access as this is what is waking the iMac up every two hours when it is sleeping. My suspicion is that when it wakes this way it is in a low power mode that might be playing havoc with the NIC coming up properly which results in the shares being booted. So far in three days not one disconnection. I suspect this is a driver problem in the new chipset being used, but apple clearly doesn't care as they complained to me that it is not supported to do network shares from their machines.
