Im in the same camp as yourself. but I will at least wait until the October event. if nothing gets announced then I'll get them after.
Buy now unless you can wait till next year sometime. Airpower still hasn’t been released so I wouldn’t count on an Airpod update anytime soon.
Technically, the Airpower is nonexistent entirely, as Apple completely removed all information from the website of it. So that may never be a reality ever due to manufacturing concerns with the internal coils overheating allegedly. However the AirPods 2 might be likely for October, but depending on the revisions or not, if there isn’t anything too substantial for an update, the first GEN AirPods are amazing with the technology, battery, fitment, and ease of use.
I also expect the first version the AirPods to be discontinued if Apple does announce the AirPods 2.
I hadn’t heard about Airpower being ditched, that’s too bad. I also haven’t heard anything about an update to the AirPods expected this month. I thought iPad pro and the Apple Pencil were going to be the only goodies introduced next week, I’d be impressed Apple could keep the Airpod 2 under raps unless it’s only the release of a wireless charging case for the existing Airpods.
Buy now if you need them now, if you can do with other earbuds for a while, then wait. But the AirPods are fine like they are, so that shouldn't be an issue.

After the keynote, Apple removed any advertising for the Airpower off their website, there has been no definitive answer as to why, but it’s been rumored due to the design they were going to use had the coils overlapping, which might have indicated overheating.

I read that article, all it says is AirPod like pairing for the new Apple Pencil. Am I missing the part about AirPod update?
You’re right, it says more about the pairing With the Apple Pencil with the AirPods. It was speculated that version 2 of the AirPods was possible for this fall, but that may have shifted to 2019. But that would put it right about the time release exactly 2 years ago when the AirPods did release in December, even though they were slated for October, but were slightly delayed.
This is the thread I was looking for. I’m looking at getting the Air Pods but was wondering about a possible version 2 coming soon.

Go to Costco and buy a pair at a great price. If they come out with a new version in a few weeks just return em. I bought a pair a few weeks ago - love em. If a new set comes out I'll buy those too and give my old ones to the wife.
I’m on the same boat. I’m going hold off since we are weeks away from the next live event... also, another to keep in mind that if they new one does get announce, the 1st gen will get discounted and also the holiday season is coming up too. I think the cheapest that I saw is at Costco for $140.

I have a pair of airpods (love them) and I have a $150 credit with Apple and there's nothing I need so I'm hoping a new version comes out. I've done some searching and haven't seen any evidence of a new version coming soon. I agree with others, if not announced this month with the other products, odds are they aren't going to be released anytime soon so go ahead and buy.
