I had the same problem; IIRC it is related to either 10.4.2 or a Security Update. The only solution I found was to pay $10 for the WMV Player at Flip4Mac. It has worked very well.

Default Skin Only!

Same thing happened to me, drove me crazy for a week.

Delete the preference file (see above posting) and leave the skin set to the default. For some reason it crashes under Tiger every time you try to change the skin.

WMP has been working fine ever since.
 
When I try to remove WMP, my PB tells me there are a number of files that are locked and it won't let me throw it away! It's just festering in my trash like a rotting banana peel!

Try restarting and then try to delete them from the trash again. Leave it in there too long and it'll start to smell bad. :(
