Hi guys, my brother just woke up and his iPhone was in DFU (with the iTunes screen) and a support/restore link on top. The weird thing is, he installed iOS 10 a week ago flawlessly, he just woke up today and was greeted by that screen. Is there a way to fix this without restoring the phone? He plugged the phone, a progress bar filled on the phone but now iTunes is stuck on "Waiting for iPhone".

Most odd bug I've ever seen.

Thanks!

Hmm... My phone just restarted out of the blue a minute ago.

Has he tried restarting the phone? Like get it to turn off, then turn it back on and see if it's still in DFU.
Thanks for the quick reply Jessica! Unfortunately he had no luck, the phone boots up to "iPhone can't be updated, must be restored to factory settings" but the thing is, what update? Most odd.

EDIT: WTF the iPhone has now been restored to factory settings but he can't restore with his iCloud backup as the account the phone asks for is not the one he uses, it shows trp1018@msn. Could someone have hacked his Apple ID?

Any place but here or there....
Interestingly, I deleted all my iCloud account activity from returned iPads and this iPhone 6s of mine. I did an erase and restore this morning to discover, activation lock. Since I didn't think I'd need my phone's serial #, I am screwed until at least this evening. If not longer. The scary thing, AC+ doesn't show my 6s a registered device and I bought AppleCare+ with this phone last December.

That is some weird ****

I have a hunch that "Contacts Found in Apps" might have something to do with all this.

Did he buy it used? If so, sounds like the guy who sold it to him did not remove the phone from his Apple profile and log out of iCloud.

Nope, straight from Apple last October.

I don't sync contacts with other apps and don't have any passwords saved etc. Anyway, this phone is useless until the Validation team authorizes a restore without the activation lock. So I'm without a phone for at least another 24 hours, if not 48. She did assure me that my iCloud account was not hacked, but I am not sure I buy that (despite seeing no devices there). And, no, AppleCare+ does not cover this. However, the senior rep I spoke said if she has to go to battle for me to get another iPhone she will, since I provided my original receipt from the Apple store and all other proof that it's my phone & account. Not particularly happy right now, but there's nothing I can do so I am just seeing this resolved tomorrow night and I'll proceed from there. Shame I didn't do two step verification but I will once this is sorted.
