Hi,
The wish:
to have skype running, put mac to sleep, have mac wake on wireless lan i.e someone rining me from another location using skype.

Anyone know if
1: you can WOL using wireless
2: you can WOL over skype

Has anyone managed to do this?

*WOL - Wake on Lan.
Thanks
Scott

That would actually be really cool. Can your computer even receive any notifications when its in sleep though?

yeah wake on lan data in packets normally wake a computer up but im not sure if this is the case with wireless. I assume if you tick the option in prefs it leaves the wireless receiver running (and therefore consume more power) with that asside, im sure it can be done.
ill experiment when i get home from work, just wondered if anyone else had done this?

Well, that's what wake-on-LAN is. It allows for your computer, for instance, to serve a hard drive, but go to sleep and then wake up when it receives a request for the hard drive, etc.

There appear to be some fairly substantial limitations to wake-on-LAN, though... this article reports that it does not support wireless network connections.

Which I guess also makes sense from the standpoint that keeping the wireless card sufficiently alive to look for these packets would be a real drain on battery life....

yeah this is what i thought, however there was one comment i saw on an article who said they had WOL working on wireless, not sure how true this was but worth looking into.

EDIT:
lol what a coincidence, after clicking that link i realised it was the article i was on about, read the comment " wake on wireless = WOW, I followed up your guide "
