Wondering if anyone could design me a logo?

Trying not to be cheeky with a thread title such as that is hard. I'd really appreciate if someone could give making me a neat looking logo for my site a whirl. It's in my sig, take a look.

I'm seriously lacking one, I've had a whirl myself but I am totally terrible in that design aspect. My site is nothing special to be honest, feel free to also critique the site too. Positve feedback is always good. I enjoy it and everyone must start somewhere. I'll be sure to give whoever has a shot at a design the credit on the site too :).

It will be used as my gravatar and social network photo, as well as on the main site itself. I'd really appreciate it :).

Could have probably made a simple and effective logo with the time you took to make this. Yet you'd rather get a few laughs than someone really appreciate your work and make really good use of it, essentially bringing more people's attention across the web to your designs.

Personal preference and all that :).

To create branding for a company takes time and effort - even if it is only a little effort you are still taking advantage of the years of experience and skill of people.

Asking professionals to do work for free damages our careers.

Anyway, how do I know what you want - there was no brief. Maybe you would like this logo - how would I know?

Sorry if it was to damage your career or hobby. Unlike you, I won't mock that. As stated in the OP, I have no idea what revolves around designing such a logo.

These are our careers, and not a hobby. Branding is not easy and requires insane amounts of research and planning. You are not the first one to ask for free work, and people do not take kindly to it. It undermines what we do and is insulting itself. If you've got a few hundred bones and an actual creative brief I'm sure someone will be more than happy to help you.

Guys, don't make it hard on each other. Mockery isn't the way of solution. If your hands are full, just say so.

And if your pocket is empty, say so too. My popcorn is for YouTube comments only.

Oh my god, an actual constructive and informative post. People may not take kindly to it, however, approach is key here. Why not just post something such as you have, rather than slating or mocking someone who obviously wasn't aware of such hostility. How people get business done with such an attitude I cannot see.

A different post from the same people, explaining 'free' samples of such work just don't happen, but then offering paid work and some contact details, plus previous examples of their work.. And they could have come away with some cash in their pocket, and I'd be happy with a spanking new logo.

The OP asked for a design service for free, and that's what he got. Now, if he'd asked how much it costs to have branding created, or some advice that would be a whole different ball game.
 
I've learnt a valuable lesson today. You design guys are a heated bunch when it comes to the topic of free work. It makes sense really, however sometimes a different approach is all it takes. A nice heated debate is something everyone loves, however it's clear this thread isn't going to go anywhere apart from more mockery, which is frankly boring and uncalled for when it comes to people's jobs and hobbies.
 
I don't think that you meant to cause any trouble at all, but asking that kind of thing generally causes a stirring in any design community. Just recognize that design is a service performed by talented individuals who have put a lot of time, money, and effort into getting to their current skill level. It's often equated to asking a plumber, for example, to do free work for you, and can be taken (whether it was intentional or not) as a disrespect to work of designers in general.

Again, I don't expect you, or most people to have known any of this, and I dont think that you had any bad intentions, but now you know.

I don't think the simple text that you've got now looks bad, though.

Asking for free design work does mock his career, though. It's like asking a chef to come over and make you dinner, simply because you've given it a shot, and you're not great at cooking. That devalues the skill they have built their professions upon. Most designers would have the same reaction, no matter where you ask.

Designers (even great ones) regularly deal with clients who undervalue them. Many clients think anyone that can draw can design. That's why you hear about business owners hiring their niece or nephew to design their logo/brochure/etc.

Bottom line: you should be providing some remuneration. It doesn't need to be monetary, but credit on a website without any significant readership isn't appropriate to the work required. Also, as others have noted, you're going to need to provide some direction. Logos are meant to convey a message, and the designer needs to know what that message is. It's more than just making something attractive.

Zav: the sarcastic logo design is tradition when designers are asked for free work, so I'm not surprised that was the first response you received. You'll find the same response on most other forums. Perhaps it should be preceded with this:
http://www.no-spec.com

That said, it's a serious problem in the industry, so don't lecture anyone about different approaches. Plenty of us volunteer our services, but it's usually to a charity or something of the like.
