Personally, I would be using the iFixIt guides. They are easier to follow, and use pictures to illustrate what you're doing.

Yes, you are good. The macbook takes a 2.5 inch serial ata (SATA). There are cheaper HDD on ebay. Wait till after xmas and you should be able to buy a 160Gb Sata for about $50 - $60 shipped on ebay.
