I'm going to be looking to buy a Mac Pro very soon and I'm wondering what to do with the iMac that I have now. It's a mid 2010 27" iMac i7 with 8GB of ram and a 1TB HDD; my first thought is to pass it on to my wife but the only thing she will use it for is internet and school, light photo editing. Should I attempt to trade this iMac for a Mac Pro? sell it and buy her a Mac Mini, or just keep it? Only reason I'm thinking of geting rid of it is because I just don't see her using this much power in her day to day uses. What do you guys recommend? do you often find people wanting to trade a mac pro for an iMac? does it have good market value right now? or keep it for the wife?

I think you should just sell it and use that money to buy a Mac Pro. IMO trades are rarely a good deal. Unless you find someone who specifically states that he wishes to switch his Mac Pro for an iMac, don't even try. Selling it for cash will be much faster and then you can buy the Mac Pro you want.

Your iMac will fetch a nice amount of $ so keeping it for the wife doesn't make much sense. With the money you get from the iMac, you could easily buy two Mac Minis for her.

how much are these fetching right now in a used market?

that's not bad at all, i would take 1800... be nice if I could find a site that deals with mac for mac trades though, and trade for a mac pro to avoid the hastle. I appreciate the help!

That site offered me 950 for my 2010 15" MBP. Craigslist sold for $1300. Craigslist would be best bet - cash transaction, no fees, no hastle.

There is no doubt he would get more money selling it on his own. When I sold my last car I got far more for it than trading it in." However I also had to hassle with "buyers" not showing up, risking getting robbed and advertising it. It's possible going the recycle route may be worth it to the OP, only he can decide that though.

Keep in mind the current rumor is that the iMac line will be refreshed in the near future. If you wait to sell until after this refresh then your value will take a hit.

They offered me 1400 for it... I put it on the market today for 1800, we'll see what happens... thanks for the help.

What are your plans for a display for the Mac Pro? If it was me I would keep the iMac, and use it as a monitor in "target display mode". That would also give you access to the iMac's speaker system through the Mini Displayport. You could also use the iMac's hard drive for file backup, or additional storage via the network. Also, you would have instant access to either computer. The only negatives would be extra power usage, and heat generation (not a negative in cold weather).

Im the curious one.

Why sell? At least in terms of raw processing power the i7 iMac is faster than most current Macpros.

You have go to an 8 core MP to see something faster...

Thats what I'm planning on going with, with a 5870 GPU... and I would like the upgradability

That's not true. Only the base quad has less power. The 3.2 should be about the same, and the hex blows the i7 out of the water.

I usually donate good stuff, iMacs, printers, scanners, Photoshop books, whatever,,,,,to our local school. One of the teachers comes over and takes a look and what they can use, she takes over to the school. The rest of it either goes to the library, my grandkids, or on to our local FreeCycle Yahoo site.

(PS, I had a big Glock sticker on one old Mac on the back of it, and had to scrape it off before it got to the school.)

Really? You need people to tell you what to do with your almost new imac?

Why post your commentary? What does it add to the thread? Seriously, if you have something helpful to contribute for the benefit of the OP then do so. If not, we can all do without your needless and unconstructive criticism.

are u kidding me? no CHANCE he will get 1800 for that computer, its an old i7 and the sandy bridge models are around the corner, he can get $1400 MAYBE. just go on craigslist and check prices.

You could give it to me, I'll buy your wife a mac mini, and you wont have to worry about me not using that much power :D
No hassle ;)

But really, I don't know about getting 1800 from it, but Craigslist or even an eBay auction with a reserve set would be your best bet
