Basically Slingplayer was the straw that broke the camel's back. I'd been contemplating jailbreaking months ago for the sake of Backgrounder alone, but held on since Pocket Tunes's integrated browser was tolerable enough. This weekend though I finally took the plunge. First attempt with QuickPwn got stuck on the Apple logo when restarting, but I was able to restore and the second try worked.
No losses - I have all my old emails, sms's, contacts and photos. Just be sure to backup through iTunes prior to the jailbreak.
All my old apps are back with no loss of settings, the only thing is that I'll have to rearrange them again since they were restored in alphabetical order. I can carry on purchasing and upgrading through iTunes exactly as before.
No lagging or excessive crashing so far! If you're a purist/plain vanilla person like me and don't need to customize (IOW stay away from Winterboard), there shouldn't be any cause for concern. I understand that for many people that's the whole point of jailbreaking in the first place, but it works for me.
Now I'm slinging over 3G (surprisingly good quality with full bars even in NYC) and as a added bonus can finally background Slacker/Pandora/Absolute.
I also have Skype credit that I can use if needed without finding a hot spot. Very happy and wondering why I waited till now. I seriously doubt it'll be worth upgrading my phone now, especially if Cycorder/Qik turns out tolerable (haven't had a chance to test yet).
Just wanted to reassure others like me that it's ok to take the plunge! If I put Cydia and Installer on the last page, you couldn't even tell except for the above gained functionality.
