I retired my mid-2012 iMac and acquired a 15" 2019 MBP (MacBookPro15,3) and a BlackMagic Pro eGPU was gifted to me as well. I may just build my own eGPU in a generic, upgradable chassis and hock the BlackMagic but that's another story. The Mac is running Mojave 10.14.5.

My iMac was 27" so I found myself acquiring a 27" IPS panel. It's the Acer XF270HU which can do 144 Hz at WQHD resolution (2560x1440). It's an old-ish monitor with a version 1.2 DisplayPort (as well as an HDMI 2.0 port but I don't use that). This monitor is plugged into the eGPU via the DisplayPort, which on the BlackMagic side is capable of DP version 1.4 (I think it can do 5k at 60 Hz or something).

The Mac sees all the refresh rates of the monitor as being 0.12 Hertz less than what they should be. For example instead of 144 Hz it's 143.88 Hz, as you can see in the attached screenshot. This seems a little odd to me, makes me think the Mac is seeing the monitor as a TV, but in the Displays section of System Information there's no mention of it being a "Television". (That screenshot also attached.)

Perhaps there's something just slightly broken about how Mac is discovering monitor capabilities over DisplayPort? The monitor seems to function fine otherwise. One thing I haven't tried is to connect this monitor straight to the MBP, only because I don't have a DP->USB-C cable or adapter at the moment.

A little weirder still is that 144Hz is possible over HDMI 2.0. I did try an HDMI cable into the BlackMagic. Mac saw the monitor with three possible refresh rates: 59.88, 120, and 144. ¯\(ツ)/¯

If anyone else here has experience with this sort of stuff feel free to chime in. I've googled the subject fairly exhaustively but there's not much out there. I did come across a Ruby script that can be used to override the monitor's EDID to force RGB mode (i.e in the event your monitor is incorrectly seen as a TV), and I tried this but it limited the refresh rates to 60 Hz.

Cheers,
f00f (as in f00fc7c8 -- the f00f bug)

You're making something out of nothing.
If the refresh rates show in the displays pref pane produce a pleasing image (whether they're "wonky" or not)...
... just use them, and smile.

"that is all..."
