Won't log off or shut down

Ever since updating from lion to mountain lion my iMac mid 2011 randomly does not log off or shut down. It happens randomly and not every time but I click to log off or shut down and it does nothing. HELP?

Next time it happens check the system log, it might say what is preventing the computer from logging off or shutting down.

Open console, it's in Applications -> Utilities

Once open Choose system log from the list on the left side of the app.

My 2009 MBP has done this consistently since upgrading to ML GM, as well as not connecting to wifi and not being able to quit apps. When not able to shut down or restart, I am also not able to quit open app or open any other apps.
