Newbie here, so sorry if already answered!

But every time I install a new app and try to open it, it prompts:

"The app is damaged and should be moved to the trashcan"

Is there any way around this? :(

so much missing info in your post; one app?? ALL apps? are you downloading the same app repeatedly? did the download finish? if that's the message, it's probably there for a reason...

you have a bigger issue that i'm not sure what the workaround is but i've subscribed as i'm interested.

For now, use this
https://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/
tick everything
apply it to the app

you may have to do this a couple of times but the app will open up ok.

I've read around, and it looks like I should disable Gatekeeper.
Does anyone know how to do that in Catalina? The ways I've found doesn't work :(

The 'sudo' command isn't working

catalina now uses zsh as a default shell, i don't think sudo/certain commands work the same as previous OS's now.

wait for the GM release. I have some "totally legit" photoshop installers that no longer work for Catalina, but were fine in Mojave. Could be a beta thing. WhatsApp doesn't even open for me.

I mostly have those "totally legit" programs too. Some work, but today all of a sudden, the programs stopped working out of the blue. Like working one minute, took a shower, came back and they wouldn't open. Strange that is!

I'd say look into whether or not they've been code signed and whether permissions are correct for them.
If not might be a great idea to download them again from the App Store. If they're the "totally legit" kind of thing > you might want to think about saving up for the real thing. They won't be working in the future at all, but neither will things like specter and meltdown either ;)
