Woohoo, Mac Pro arrived today

Ordered day after WWDC and because of memory config and airport extreme, delivery had been pushed back to Sept 25. To my surprise and delight, Fedex just pulled up and delivered . Perfect timing as my Powerbook G4 was deathly slow last night LOL.

Taking some time to plot how to best setup, I'm relying on the way more experienced Mac users here on tips, options to setup.

Pretty much loaded for bear, Core Duo 3ghz chips, (4) 500GB hard drives, 8G ram and X1900 512mb video card.

Appreciate any/all insight to an efficient setup. I'll take some pics tonight. Darn heavy box

Oh my, that sounds like an incredible machine!! 8GB of RAM!! Ouch!

I'd reinstall OS X, they usually come preinstalled with loads of crap that you don't really want or need. Other than that start to play and enjoy!!

A lot of people will suggest a clean install of the system, installing only those components you'll want. Should go a long way to help efficiency.

Don't use migration assistant with a G4/PCC. Spend the right quantity of time and install your apps. You don't need to install the system.
I have an Apple Center in Milan, Italy and we always suggest NOT to migrate a PPC system on an Intel machine.

agreed on the pcc>intel thing. I had some weird issues with certain processes running in rosetta because of this.

did a clean install and all is well. a bit tougher, but in the end, runs a lot quicker (obviously).

Things like this have been said countless times, yet nobody ever posts any real-world benchmarks, only "feelings". As far as I can tell, in my own experience, it's a bunch of bologna. But feel free to prove me wrong.

It won't run faster but the hard drive won't be as clogged up with all of the pre-installed applications. My mini and my mate's iMac both came with lots of cheap rubbish games preinstalled as well as a trial for OS X. You're looking at at least 500MB-1GB of gumpf.
