I am on a 21" iMac desktop (2011) running OS X El Capitan. Word for Mac (2011 - 14.7.7) When creating a document Word will not let me insert a pic from Photos. Can I do something to change this? If not, is there a better word processing app that I can use. Have seen negative reviews on Pages.

If you haven't already, open Photos>Preferences and click the "Use as System Photo Library" button. The photos should then appear in Word's Insert>Pictures>Photo Browser where you can drag them into the document.

I followed your instruction but the option "Use as system Photo Library" does not respond (it is pale so I interpret that as not an available option) and it does not respond when I click on it. The only option I have available is "Show in Finder". If I click on that it does show up in Finder but when I go to Word the "Photo Library" is there but when I try to use it it is not available (it is pale) and there is no response when I try to open it and access pics. Any other suggestions?

Or just drag over from the Photos app itself.
That doesn't work. If I try to drag and drop it just bounces back into Photos. Cant get it to stay in the document.

Yes, I know it probably needs updating. I was told by local mac users to not upgrade to the newest OS on my "old" mac. But, I have tried to drag and drop but it just doesn't work when I am in Word. I have a lot of pictures on my mac and when I updated to El Capitan "Photos" was installed and I still have iPhoto from the previous OS. I can't do anything in iPhoto but everything is duplicated in Photos. So. I haven't updated since because I don't want anymore duplicates! I know I probably should do something but not sure what.

I'm not sure either. Your Mac is too old to run Mojave, but it will run High Sierra very nicely. Your problem could be related to the older software version. It also likely could be due some weird setting. Can you even drag and drop from Photos to the Desktop? If you can, then the system is fine and Word is likely the problem. If you cannot, then something is wrong with your system.

I can drag and drop to the desktop and if I am in Finder I can drag and drop to All my Files. Yes, I was told my Mac was too old for Mojave, do you think I should upgrade to High Sierra? If I do is there a better word processing/graphics app to download in place of Word. Have only used Word/Excel (although I am not very proficient in excel). Have been reading negative reviews about Pages although the people here in our Mac Users Group tout it. Don't know what to believe, guess thats why I have been reluctant to do much changing! But I am doing more word processing for an organization I belong to and need a better system - or at least one that works!!

If you're doing it for work, there is probably value in updating. Of course, High Sierra is free, but Word will have a cost. Nowadays, Office is mostly a subscription package, and prices for individual users run from $6.99/mo to $69.99/yr. You could stick with monthly payments while you're making money with it, and cancel anytime. The apps themselves are downloaded free of charge from the Mac App Store and automatically kept updated. You simply pay Microsoft for the subscription and then log in to the apps. When the subscription expires, the apps remain and still work to read and print, but won't save files. There are also subscriptions for families running from $9.99/mo to $99.99/yr that allow 6 people to install unlimited copies provided they only use them on one device at a time.

Having said all that, Pages isn't bad at all.
