I'm using Entourage and Word for Mac. Someone sent me a Word file created on a PC. I can open the file in Entourage. If I save the file to Word, I cannot open it and it gives an error. If I save it to Documents or the desktop I can open it.

What is the error message you receive?

And how do you "save a file to Word"? You should be saving the file to a location on your hard drive, and THEN opening it... or opening the file from within Entourage.

The message says: might not be a valid document. I can open it in Entourage or if I save it to the desktop or document folder. But if I save it as a file in Word then it won't open. In the PC world you can save any file received into Word and it will open when you open the Word app. I don't want to save to a documnets folder

Sorry but there's a slight communication problem here. Word is an app, not a place to store data. I still can't work out what you mean by saving a file to Word. I'm a bit mad, so you might have to spell it out very clearly for me. What exactly are you doing? :)

Thanks everyone think I got it now. Here is what was happening: when I tried to save, the box highlighted the document as: xxxx not xxxx.doc. So, when I tried to save xxxx to Word it wouldn't. When I highlighted xxxx.doc then it worked. It's a subtle thing I didn't notice. Don't understand why the software chose not to highlight .doc
