does word for mac have notepad in it? i would like to learn html and just curious if i can write it using notepad in word

There's a freeware app called Taco HTML Edit that can be found at Version Tracker. It's a very simple app, but it works great, and I use it for all of my HTML work.

Word 2204 has a 'notebook' aspect.
It's going to take Microsoft 200 years to put that in?

Anyway, Notepad is part of Windows and not Word. And as it has been said, TextEdit on OS X is what the original poster wants.

It should probably be noted that the original poster should use TextEdit in "plain text" mode and not "rich text" mode.

TextEdit will work great as a replacement for Notepad assuming you put it into plain text mode in the preferences. However, I really like TextWrangler, which is free (formerly not free) for all kinds of text editing.

Another vote for OS X's native Text Edit. It does just as good a job as anything else for html.
