Word, PP, Excel sooooo slow on Mac ... other options?

I have the office holy-trinity ... Word, Powerpoint, and Excel on my Mac. I use these so much at work on my WIN machines that I like using them at home.
However ... they run soooooo slow on my Mac.
It takes forever for them to open and even then file operations are much slower than on my anemic work laptop.


Is there an alternative to W/PP/XL that runs faster???
I'm not thrilled with the native Apple alternatives.

Google Docs, Libre Office, Open Office, NeoOffice. All are decent enough alternatives.

I have no idea what kind of Mac you have or how it's configured, but I have MS Office running on a 2013 iMac and it opens/runs more than acceptably (both Office 2011 and 2016 versions). Same goes for running them on a 2014 MacBook Pro. It seems to me you should look into why it's running poorly on your Mac before giving up on the apps you're used to using.

I have a 2009 Mac 27", 1TB HD, 12GB RAM.

Other apps don't run nearly as slowly.

I have a new 2018 Mac 27" on order. : )

What Version of office are you running? Office 365 ? Office 365 works fine on my 2016 MacBook Pro with touch bar.

I have a 2009 Mac 27", 1TB HD, 12GB RAM.

The HDD is the big bottleneck, imo. I have a 2008 machine with an SSD and Excel (pretty much the only thing I use from MS) opens up fairly fast. Just timed opening Excel and it took about 5 seconds without a spreadsheet. Opening an encrypted spreadsheet took a few seconds more.

The bloated software packages and or resource heavy office apps, Photos, virtualization software, all open slower than most everything else, to be fair, but an SSD makes a big difference.

As you have been told here and in another forum where you are a member, your machine is old and the HDD is likely running on its last leg. Let us know how things are going when you receive your new iMac. BTW, that's a 2017 5K model you ordered, not a 2018. The 2018 iMac has not been announced by Apple (if there even will be one).
