Word Processors

I'm a mac newbie and I'm going to be doing a lot of word processing. Something that allows a lot of user control without taking over all the functions (like MS Word).

I know about OpenOffice, but is there anything like wordperfect (is that even mac available)?

Have you checked out AppleWorks? People crap on it because of the interface but it works great.

There's also TextEdit.

TextEdit should cover most of an average user's word processing needs. It is even compatible with Word for when you need to exchange files.
