I have the words with friends free version. I'm getting annoyed with all the ads, so I decided that I want to buy the full version. But before buying, I noticed Scrabble!

I checked the differences with both games and Scrabble supports retina display and you can play 50 games at once (compared to just 20 with words with friends).

Both games cost $3, and are highly reviewed. I just don't know which one to get. Does scrabble allow you to chat with the players? Cause words with friends does, and I like that feature.

What do you guys think?

[I made this in the iphone app threads, but I figured I'll get a faster response in these threads since there are usually 2000 people looking here throughout the day]

Words supports fast app switching and retina.
Can be played on 3G or wifi playing against someone you know not just random.
Scrabble only allows wifi and Bluetooth for people you know.

Scrabble supports Retina, and I was playing with it on Wifi, but I turned it off, and it works on 3G also.

I can also play with 25 people who have a facebook account, and with 25 random people, 50 total.

Only thing I don't like is the notifications, which doesn't have any.

big fan of words with friends, and the free version does enough to get me by, not too worried about ads. Now i'm just struggling with people cheating lol

Scrabble. I like how it uses Facebook, but now doesn't require it. I like their retina display and fast app switching. Push notification are nice too. Words with friends felt cheap with the UI. On the iPhone and iPad, it feels so crisp. I also hate the teacher feature.

Words With Friends, hands down! I personally just like the UI and the ease of play better in comparison to Scrabble.

Well looks like they have done some updates to scrabble
since I last looked.

I just don't like the Facebook thing. I do like if you know the username you can play someone you know without Facebook.

I have both, and play both a lot. There are pluses and minuses to both games.

Here's how they measure up in key word games categories:

  1. Graphics: Scrabble 8, Words 6. Scrabble looks cleaner to me.
  2. UI: Scrabble 6, Words 10. I think Words works nicely, loads faster on both wifi and 3g, and is easier to use. The quote feature inside the game is identical to the Messages app.
  3. Features besides online play: Scrabble 9, Words 4. Both have pass-n-play, but Words is buried deep in the menus. Scrabble also has Best Word and Teacher mode, which are helpful, as well as dictionary confirm. It also counts your score for you as you place tiles, increasing with each tile, but doesn't provide real time info about the validity of your play. Scrabble has wifi connectivity and bluetooth connect as well.
  4. Dictionary: Words 5, Scrabble 9. Words gets the win here, because its dictionary is much less obscure, yet robust. Scrabble's Teacher feature suggest words as the highest possible point score play and they are words I've never heard of before.
Overall: Scrabble 10, Words 8. Scrabble is the better game. If you are only going to play others online... go with Words. It has more people for random games too, probably.

My vote: get both. Why not.

How do you cheat?

search the app store for words with friends. Half of them are word generator cheats. Enter your letters, out spits the best words you can make.

You can switch to Safari pretty quick and google 'scrabble helper' as well.

But I never cheat...

I like Words With Friends. You can play against friends with Droids. Probably with Scabble too but none of my friends play scrabble. I don't mind the ads. SOme are pretty good.

I have both and prefer Words. I play Words when i want to play anyone online who wants to play. My friends prefer Scrabble so they usually invite me to play using Scrabble. The games are differentbenough that you will probably prefer one over the other after using both of them for a short time, so download both and see what you think.

Well, since I can't get a refund, I have a question to ask.

If I want to play Scrabble with someone, lets say, right next to me. I don't want to do the Pass n Play. Are we able to play together through 3G, or does it have to be through WiFi or Bluetooth?

I think that's one of the things I dislike about Scrabble, I think that multiplayer is just based on WiFi/Bluetooth, but not through 3G, which is really lame! Also, all of my public games got deleted when I left my house. Is it cause I went from a WiFi area to 3G?

I own both, but of the two, Words With Friends wins hands down. I literally never play Scrabble on my phone. It just sits there in my "game" folder. WWF I use every single day to the point that it's quite addicting. Plus, I like with playing against people I know rather than against AI (even though you can play against someone else in Scrabble).

How come this thread is not more alive? I'm also, a big fan of Words With Friends. Well, I quite enjoy Scrabble also—but rather to play it live. On the mobile, my favourite is Words With Friends.

I've been using some helpers lately, and I've settled for this word search for Words With Friends which works very well on my computer and my mobile phone. It's a bit of cheating but I'm also finding that it helps to learn new words I would have not thought about.
