work flow to tag sent messages for deletion

Has anybody evolved or hacked together a workflow that allows sent messages to be tagged for deletion in the next six months, 1 year, 2 years etc?

One way to do it is to tag sent messages with tags, and go back and delete messages tagged for deletion?

But then what should one use to tag messages - mailtags seems to be the only solution and they seem to want to store information on their own server, so not interested in using mailtags.
