Hey guys,
I love using handoff and the ease of having my iPhone and iPad just talk to each other so well.
I have received a new work MacBook and I'm am having a hard time deciding on if I want to create a new work Apple ID or use my personal.
I do social media marketing so a lot of my work is actually on my iPhone as well (apps and images) so I really want my phone and MacBook to talk to each other seamlessly.
I'm fine to add my personal ID to the work MacBook but if there was an ability to have the two ID's (in the event I created a work one) talk to each other as if they were a family that would be ideal.
I have family sharing with a family member but I don't think that's the same, they are still seperate ID's and I don't think the device can talk to each other in the same way devices with the same ID would.

it's just so good to have all my passwords already populate, possibly have iMessage turned on, images sync with my iCloud account because my job is 50 billion images a day. Apps as well, like Notes - though I suppose all other apps are a log in, not Apple ID based.

Also, I want all the digital data to remain on the laptop in the case that I move on one day. If I sign up of my personal Apple ID I want to make sure they will still have the docs and images saved to the system.

If anyone has a good set up please let me know.

Your mac has the possibility to set up multiple user accounts and it sounds like it could be a good solution for you.
You would set one one user with your work ID and another with your home id.
If you have a finger print sensor on your mac and fast switching turned on, you should be able to seamlessly jump from one to another almost instantly.

In general, I wouldn't use my personal account on company-owned devices.

On the work Macbook, use the given ID or if they don't give you one, just create a separate AppleID specifically for it. As for working on your phone, I know it's not ideal, but I would not use my personal iPhone either. I would buy a second iPhone specific for that work, and then you can use the same AppleID as the work macbook. Hopefully your work give you a work number + data allotment.

I know this is probably not the answer you want. But I really encourage you not to mix up anything personal on work devices. It will saves you a lot of trouble later on. Keep things separate.

I keep personal and work things separate. I did use my personal number for work once and all the staff at the company used to call me about problems when I left, so now I have two phones, one supplied by work and my personal one.

Keep things separate as its much easier in the long run.

At least for larger employers, they will have control over ALL of your content when you have it combined. They may even take control if not ownership of your Apple ID. It will be a total mess and headache once you leave employment.

It is hard to say with smaller employers, but the law will likely side with the employer / business through implied consent at a minimum.

To combine two slogans from a First Lady and an Athletic brand, “Just don’t do it!”

Create a NEW "work ID" and use ONLY that on the "work" MacBook.

DON'T mix "business" and "pleasure".

Things just go better that way.

Remember that your employer could (and probably does) have full control over the device and the content on it, in addition obviously to ownership of the machine itself. Therefore, +1 to creating a separate ID for work and another recommendation to avoid mixing personal and business information in general. Too many potential risks and headaches.

Thanks everyone!
I have also just read that Sidecar doesn't work unless on the same Apple ID ?
The company I work for only has 2 owners and 3 employees - 5 people in total, it has more of a casual vibe however I suppose that's how things get messy.
How has Apple not created something like a Work Apple ID that piggybacks from your personal ID?
What everyone is saying sounds right though, I'll create a new Apple ID using my work email that way I can hand everything over to them in the event I move on one day.
Thanks again team.
If anyone else discovers a solution please comment.

I feel like an outlier here, but I sign into my work Mac with my personal ID but I don't sync anything (other than purchases). This way I get the best of both worlds - work can't see any of my personal stuff but I can still access all my useful apps and stuff like Sidecar just works.

This is the energy I need ?
Yeah I actually do that with my iPad, I’ve stopped my messages and photos syncing coz other people use my iPad, but apps do and I can track everything - so that might work.
I mean I could try it for a week or two and if I find it’s not working just sign out.

Not a bad idea I reckon, trying it out for a bit. For me the main reason for using my personal account was because I had ~$200 worth of productivity-related apps purchased on it that I like to use, so it was just a lot easier. I'm sure I could have conned work into buying me a fresh set of apps but then it just feels like a waste of money and a lot more hassle policing two accounts.

It's a compromise. It depends on your comfort level.

For me personally, a company owned device is simply that, company owned. So it's not mine, and thus technically the company has the right on anything that's going on in there. As such I would avoid anything that can complicate things in the future.

If I was allowed to set up my own account on the device, I would probably set up a new work account as a child account, and then join that account as a family to my main account. That way I can still share my purchased apps with that device while having it as a restricted account.
