Workflow help needed ( Mac Pro with internal SSD and External HDD )

Hi. My new Mac Pro late 2013 ( Quad Core, 16 Gb RAM , SSD 500 GB ) is coming with a WD 2 TB HDD USB 3.0 to use as a external HDD. I will use it mainly for photo editing ( large D800 Raw files ) with Photoshop and Lightroom ( for printing only )

Can you tell which of the two procedures will be the best to obtain optimal performance ?

1) Use the SSD to import my photos, process locally and then save them off to WD external HDD

2) Transfer files to external HDD and edit them while they sit on that drive, connected via usb 3.0.

See if you can get away with just working with them on the external drive. Maybe upgrade to a thunderbolt array one day, it'd be pretty fast. We have one of those Pegasus arrays at work connected to a mini, it's fast with transfers (mostly batches of between 20 - 200 10MBsh images).

At home I have a Final Cut workflow of using my SSD to work on the library, then I drop it off to slower storage when I'm done.

So, do you tell me to edit my files on the internal SSD and transfer them off to the external HDD ?
What if I edit the files on a Lacie 256GB Rugged USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt SSD first and save the final job on the external HDD ?

I'd say try it on the external first and see if it's usable, if it works then great, then you don't have to worry about managing more files.

#1 for sure. For best performance, there's no doubt... Work off the SSD as much as absolutely possible. Use the external for archival storage.

may i suggest you look into a fusion drive for your workflow? it seems like that would be a great way to handle the local caching after the import, and you'd get close to SSD speeds across the board..
