Depends on whether you want to do software or hardware, but some areas that will help get you there...

Computer Science
Computer Engineering
Electrical and/or Mechanical Engineering
Mathematics

Cork, Ireland.
Programming/Computer Science/Electronics Engineering probably would be most apt.

But any personal interest in development/Apple would help too. If you had any shareware Mac development experience, or iPhone app; that would show both technical knowledge, and initiative & drive.

If you are definite on wanting to work for Apple and not any other company it will pay off to write to Apple or even to SJ and see if you can gain as much insight to the company. They themselves should have an idea where they are headed and may open up a different field for you to follow.
