working Mac Pro 5,1 DIAG lights burn when unit off

hello. have an issue here. my newly acquired USED mac pro 5,1 runs perfectly; however, when the unit is NOT RUNNING (powered-off but plugged-in)… two status LED’S burn continuously: Green-LED on “S5”, and Red-LED “PLT RS” (the second LED down … two above the “EFI DONE” LED ... see attached pic). Then, when the unit has booted up… there are several green led’s two of which are on that same block as “EFI DONE” … but this time it’s the 3rd and 6th green lights (“X1 PG” and “5V”) or something like that). I've attached a jpg of the block I’m talking about … although the pic isn’t of my rig!

Your opinion: IS THIS A POWER-SUPPLY RELATED PROBLEM? I've been searching internet for hours... and can't even find a FULL description of all the diag-lights and what they mean!!! Thanks for the feedback!!!

google for apple technician guide mac pro (mid 2010) and the first hit should be the Service Guide PDF. pages 34 and following might be of interest for you. all of the LEDs are off on my machines. maybe the DIAG button on your logic board is stuck..?

Anyway, your Mac Pro seems works fine, may be just press the DIAG button to check if it's stuck.

THANK YOU to all that replied... BUT... I've already been through that. Here's the most complete image I've found (thanks to myself)... and I'm certain that parts of my annotation are incorrect. SURELY... SOMEONE has expertise with this subject enough to say "yay" or "nay"! Respectfully, jj

none of my Mac Pros (4,1 & 5,1) has this many buttons on the main logic board. maybe you do own a Mac Pro prototype without knowing it..?

Sigh; sorry if I've put others off because of my "arrogance"; I guess I'm over-expressing my frustration with my inability to locate ANY online documentation and expertise related to this matter. I'm a 55-yr-old that's never had this much trouble trying-to-find simple, straight-forward hunches or conjectures on what status-lights might indicate! I'd be HAPPY to eat all the arrogant words if anyone would PLEASE point me to some information.... or even innuendoes! (wink)

BTW: I was told that this Mac Pro was used "as a server in an Apple store"; the Apple technician that sold me the unit stated that he's used the unit with the "Christmas lights" glowing for awhile. My main concern is that if nobody else has witnessed this behavior, and no online documentation exists explaining what the lights actually mean when glowing... then perhaps I have no business owning the device. Thanks for everyone's input... good, bad, or indeterminate.

Hello; I'm just tagging this thread to THANK all of you that responded; my queries in the Apple community [last January] went without a single reply!

I've recently determined that this device is INDEED an authentic Apple SERVER PROTOTYPE -- and that the observed behavior of the back-board status LEDs (expressed in my previous posts) precisely matches the specifications documented here: http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/xserve/xserve_early2009.pdf

Note that it was the ABSENCE of feedback from this board that fueled my persistence to HOLD ON to this device -- because if someone here doesn't know the answer -- chances are the experience is VERY MUCH UNIQUE!

Well, beside the fact that this thread has brought forth into common knowledge the technical insight that the majority of the Mac Pro 5,1 back-board status lights exist for a purpose they will never be used for — the only thing “intriguing” about wringing one’s hands for 6 months in belief that perhaps you have a DEFECTIVE and WORTHLESS scrap of hardware — is the IRONY that it took only PERSISTENCE & SHEER LUCK (as opposed to anyone's great wit and wisdom) to comprehend that the device is One-Of-A-Kind and MORE VALUABLE than an ordinary Mac Pro 5,1. I'm not a collector of rare uniquities, so that's why I'm selling.

Jay, I have 5 mac pros at my home office and 4 hot spares in my garage- I don't think jealously is really an appropriate slander.
Its more just that I know the value of these machines, Seeing as I sell them, lots of them.

Not entirely sure why such a young account is being rather heavy with the flaming. Id suggest against more posts with that tone if you do want help in the future.

I get that perhaps your attitude was probably due to perceived hostility from other members but just remember that your account has contributed very little to this forum, you have 10 posts and all of them are in this thread, which essentially became an advert for this unit you got your hands on. so you REALLY don't have the rights to suggest that others aren't contributing help to the level you needed. this is a community forum, of which you haven't really contributed anything.

Please bear that in mind in the future.
