Apple showed during keynote that Activity app can show you're run route on map with iOS 10 and WatchOS 3 with Apple Watch series 2.

Do you think that this feature is limited to Apple Watch series 2 (with built in GPS) or does it show route with first gen Apple Watch using iPhone's GPS?

It has been showing mapped routes during the betas on original Apple Watches, in some cases even without the assistance of the paired phone's GPS (using magic no one has explained satisfactorily yet). Not sure if that was just a proof of concept and has now disappeared or not, though.

Post 2 covered your reply but wanted to add the map has been working for my cycling as well. I typically have my phone with me which has GPS but having the route mapped is great. My Garmin does the same but now I don't need to grab the data from it.

Thank you! That's it, no need to upgrade series 2. :)

Does anyone know if this feature survived into the GM? I went for a walk with my updated original watch and updated 6S and I didn't get a map in the Activity app. The workout is there with split times, but no map.

Definitely in there on the official release, works on mine every time! Have you got motion calibration and distance location service turned on on the phone? believe this needs to be on for this to work!

Yes, that's on. I did have another GPS app running during the walk; perhaps there was some interaction. I'll try again without it.

Edit: It worked this time. I'll check to see if it works with the GPS app next time.

Quick one on this; what does the colour coding on the map represent? I used it this morning on my series 2 through the watch's onboard GPS.

I am also curious about this.

I suspect it's to do with speed, or maybe incline?
Looking at my walking route it appears to go red where I'm crossing roads, so I'm taking a guess it may be speed related? I was tracking solely on my watch which I don't think has elevation tracking so I doubt it'll be that.
