Hello everyone. I recently purchased a Retina MacBook Pro (Early 2013) with the 2.7 Quad i7, 16GB RAM, and 512 SSD (SanDisk). I am curious as to how it runs on World of Warcraft. I did read the thread sticked at the top of the page but that really hasn't been updated since last year. I would really like to know how the expected performance is at Retina Resolution (2880x1800), the expected CPU and GPU temps, a comparison in Mac as compared to windows, and as well as the stability of the game running on the GT 650M. Seeing how the GT 650M is over clocked by default, I am anticipating that it should run fine, however much of that GT 650M is spent driving the Retina resolution. If anyone has any information that would be willing the lend and hand and assist me this would be wonderful.

I haven't updated the WoW section for a looong time but the system requirements/performance section should still be spot on for most of the game as the MBP hasn't been updated yet. In the "new" Mists of Pandaria content your frame rate might run lower than the guide says as it was made with Cataclysm in mind running with the Mac's graphics settings put at medium. Can't really help you past that, you'll have to test for yourself if you want to know more.

As for the Windows vs Mac you'll probably see better performance on Windows due to better graphics drivers (not much though). Also, your Mac WILL run hotter under Windows due to Apple's iffy Windows support and could have stability problems. You'll have 0 problems if you play under OS X

you can run fine (30-40fps) in the highest resolution if you turn the graphics slider from "Ultra" to "high" (or whatever is a step below Ultra).

Currently running WOW on 15" rMBP. It works fine but there is slight screen tearing and jerkiness. The best way to test this is to go to Valley of the Four winds, above the cooking dailies and fly around. You will see what I mean.

Previously artifacts also appeared when flying above Stormwind for example but it is largely resolved in 5.1. See this video here.

I miss running an instance. I was a tank in vanilla and for a few years after that. Great fun having the responsibility of getting beat on and hoping your healer was going to come through for you. But haven't played in years as things got too busy and I couldn't get the crew together.

I remember the encouragement and appreciated it. :) But once I quit the second time, that was it, time to move on.

I never understood that :D. Each expansion is like a new game. You play it for a while until you get tired of it and then you quit until the next expansion.

Oh, I think it became been-there-done-that in a new setting. Of note, I've tried several MMORPGs since and none of them has stuck. WoW set a standard I've yet to see matched.

There is some of that but I doubt you would recognize much of the game from when you played last :D.

If you are burned out on that type of game in general, I understand.

Vsync is enabled, but the FPS dropped to about 15.

are you all up to date on firmware updates?

there was some combo of buttons to push to reset something that had to do with the EFI. I used to have to do that before playing and it would change the FPS from 10 to 40. but a firmware update fixed the problem

Haven't tried it on my rMBP since 10.8.2 actually, as now I play it on my iMac instead.

Besides new settings, changes in game mechanics? My hard core friend, spends a couple hours a day doing whatever it is to gather what she needs. But she is into serious raiding.

Other then the new classes, they re-wrote the existing character classes (changed the talent system, powers, etc). They also added a lot including farming, scenarios (10 - 15 minute mini three person instances where you don't need a healer or tank), looking for raid, etc. They also expanded on the professions.

The game is mush more casual now and it doesn't force you to be on all the time unless you want to. Some nights when I play, I'll just log on, say hi to people, do some farming, do a scenario, check the AH and then log for the evening (20-25 minutes). With the looking for raid feature, you can even do some raiding if you feel like it without being in a guild that raids.

Thanks for everyone's responses. The game actually runs perfectly fine on retina resolution with around 40 FPS. The only time it dips down is if I'm running a 25 man Raid and I have to change it to 1900x1200 and I get around 90 FPS. The temps are around 84-90 with fans spinning at 4500-5200. Overall a great experience.

People still play warcrack o_O i got bored after the lich king expansion, and quit completely after cataclysm (was hoping the reset of the world would refresh my interest, but i guess i outgrew the grind) laughed my head off at the kungfu panda add on and pokemon update i read about

You have no need to comment on it then. The OP was wondering if the current version would run well on his hardware. Not if you approved of the game or not.

You tell them! I now want to log in and hug my Panda and play with my pets. Yep, a 54 year old man likes pandas and virtual pets! Some kids never grow up!
