World of Warcraft Might Have Broken my MBP 13"

Ever since I started playing WoW my MBP would get pretty hot to the point were my keys were burning my fingers, this would happen after around an hour of playtime. Two days into playing my laptop started freezing a lot, it started freezing up everything being unable to do anything (it would freeze for around 30sec then unfreeze for about 10seconds then freeze up again) This also kept happening even after I wasn't in game, so it came to a point were I had to format the mac, it works fine now but I'm afraid to play WoW again because of this freeze, anyone have any ideas on what to do?

Also, I played SC2 & Heroes of Newerth with no problems.

It sounds like it's overheating but I have never had my MB go over 80 when gaming and it needs to go over 100 for a while to start to lock up iirc so it's not working as intended.

Well, It would get hot but every time It did get hot I would just close WoW and let my computer cool down. Do you happen to know of a program that can let me check the temperature of my computer? I would like to monitor this.
 
could you install smcfancontrol (attached) and replay WOW and report back your stats

as in Temperature and Fan speed and if the fan doesn't speed up you could try to adjust it!

okay, thanks man. Will speeding up my fan mess up my MBP in any way?
 
You probably all ready know this, but use your MBP on a flat surface, not a soft/pillowly surface to ensure it ventilates properly.
 
Yeah, It's on a flat surface.

I downloaded the program and it says 180 F @ 3700~ RPM


What kind of settings should i be using?

I have my fan speed set to 5000rpm and the temperature stays between 70 - 75. Room temp is about 34+.
 
I used to start getting very unstable performance from may mac after playing around an hour or so until i started using smcfancontrol.

I def recommend starting up the fans before you play to keep temps low as you can. I have been running MAX fans @ 6200RPM for the last 7-8 months when im on WoW or other processor taxing activities.

Another tip I recommend is using this command in game (type in chat box)

/console maxfps 30

This will limit the heat generated while playing since your comp wont be pumping out retarded fps inside tunnels, old world areas, instances etc.

Laptops just aren't made for long term gaming, heat being the main issue. So you'll gradually see a decrease in performance over the span of a few hours regardless (though not as much if u stick to smcfancontrol and limiting fps)

very nice reply! I've been using the SmcFanControl for a few days now and my game has been running good. Been trying to keep my Fahrenheit below 150, I also just inserted the command "/console maxfps 30" in the chat box so hopefully this will help me out a bit.

maxfps will help out A LOT. i set mine to 50 and it never goes about 60C.

What RPM are you playing at? and what kinda mac do you have?

I'm doing around 5k RPM and sitting at 65C~ with a MBP 13" on max fps 30
