Worse after battery update?

I didn't have any problems with my MBP 15" untill i did that battery update.

I'm not imagining this. I'm very observant with my MBP, just like many of you. After doing the update just yesterday, the battery runs out more quickly. It is much hotter on the bottom (so much that my legs feel lightly sunburned). Fan runs almost all the time now! This is all new, and it never go this way. Funny thing is, i wasn't doing anything on my computer at all but watching movies with itunes. I've played quake 4, with teamspeak on, and itunes on ect. and it never ever got this hot before.

I should contact apple, but there closed now. Is there a way to undo this firmware update?

Did anyone have this problem?

I don't know if your issues include the ones listed below that Apple has identified as issues related to the battery update. From what I've been reading on the Apple discussion threads, the temp should be lower because, yes, the fans run constantly, although loe (barely audible). I must say, mine works perfectly. Also, I believe firmware updates are permanent since they are not really installed on the dirve as much as burned into the chips on the motherboard.

This battery update should be run on all MacBook and MacBook Pro computers and extra batteries that were purchased between February 2006 and April 2007.

If, after you have installed the battery update, your battery has any of the symptoms listed below, please make a reservation to bring your computer with its battery to your local Apple Retail Store, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), or call your local Apple Support Contact Center. If Apple or an AASP determines that your battery is eligible for replacement, you will receive a new battery, free of charge, even if your MacBook or MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

For MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors, this program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer.


Identifying an affected battery

Affected batteries will have one or more of the following symptoms:

Battery is not recognized causing an “X” to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar.
Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power.
Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300.
Battery pack is visibly deformed.
Note: If your MacBook or MacBook Pro battery does not have any of the symptoms noted above, your battery does not need to be replaced.

I too am having this problem...after the battery update, my 17" mac book pro runs out after one to one and a half hours...it definately use to last from 2 1/2 to 3 hrs on battery usage...not cool

Wow, I'm glad you started this thread.

I, too, have had a pretty severe drop off in my battery quality AFTER installing the battery update. What is up with that!?!?!?

my time 15" MBP CD's run time has dropped from about 2 h 15 minutes to about 50-60 min. YIKES!

Charge cycles are 184. What are you guys at cycle-wise?

I called Applecare because my battery was suckin' it up (it always had, no difference after the firmware update), and they sent me a new one overnight.

Just so that you guys can compare numbers, if you go into System Profiler > Power, look at your load cycles and your full capacity. Mine was at 118 load cycles w/ 5144 full capacity, and they said I was right on the cusp of having a problem. Since I was under warranty still, they went ahead and set me up with a battery replacement.

I'd say that if your numbers are similar to mine or worse, you should call. The new battery has been MUCH better!

I decided to call and get it resolved. It only took a few minutes - I just let the customer service rep know that the battery life was much worse after the update, and she setup a replacement to be mailed right away.

I hope this thread will help others with the same issue.

same same.. though I just did an smc reset, ie, shutdown, battery out, power out, press power for 5(10) seconds..the fan seems to be behaving better, not constantly on high, though it feels like the temps up.. and the fans are natively accordingly on.. higher. hmm.. my problem is I have to deal with apples 'third party partner' here in israel.. oh hell.
