Was looking at some articles online and came across this one: The Worst Thing About Macs. I think you should read it, it really is true. Being a PC user and a Mac user I am not really partial to either one, but I know many mac users that this article describes very well.

Yeh I agree, very irritating.

I like Macs myself, and when people actually talk nonsense, I will point it out. However, I feel generally going after these sorts of people is a waste of time...

I'll admit to not reading beyond the intro page, but I'm guessing it's something to do with zealotry. But this happens with video games, computers, movie genres...

I agree. No one will tell more lies, be more vitriolic and conduct ad hom. attacks than a Mac fanatic. They are Apple's single biggest barrier to mass consumer appeal.

When i got my eMac 3 years ago, the Macintosh platform was still a bit of a 'sin' in the world. People would say, ew you have a Mac?!? I wouldn't go to the point of arguing with them about PC vs. Mac but in the back of my mind Apple always had the edge due to the superior operating system. I will agree, however, the hardware wasn't near as good as the PC world. My eMac had a 1.25GHz G4, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD, 17" CRT, Combo Drive, and ATI Radeon 9200 32MB. A similar Dell would have had at least a 2.4GHz Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, maybe a DVD burner, and 17" LCD. Yet, i was paying for the software at the time. Plus, my eMac was a very good looking computer.

I use Windows on a daily basis. People have been complaining about Vista from day one, and I have to say it has been pleasant for me. None of the issues that seemed to plague people in the beginning have effected me. I also think the early adopters have the most issues. I was running Panther 10.3.9 6 months after Tiger came out. When I did upgrade to Tiger, most of the kinks had been worked out and it was a smooth upgrade for me. I didn't upgrade to Vista immediately, but once I did the problems had been solved. Is Vista better than XP? Absolutely. Is it better than Tiger, or for that matter Leopard? No where close. But I think the Windows hating on these boards is taken to an extreme. I have been using XP for 5 years and never had a virus, or any kind of major spyware that would slow the system down. I defrag every couple of weeks and that helps keep the system running great. Along with scanning for both viruses and spyware, my system is clean and has been that way for 6 months.

Now (for the most part), there can be no more arguing about the hardware. The new Intel Mac's have come along way from their predecessors. Now it's hard to configure a Dell tower with similar specs compared to a 20" iMac. The only negative I can say is that Apple hasn't been keeping up with the video card options. The HD2600Pro in the iMac is mediocre at best, same with the X1600 in my iMac. But then again, I don't game on my Mac. But it would be nice to have a higher end graphics card when booting into Boot Camp to play my games.

I'm not a fanboy, but I do get very excited when a new product is announced and watch pretty much all the keynotes. It's nice to see Apple reinvent with products like the iPhone, the magsafe power adapters, and the all-in-one iMac's.

I have seen a good example of mac fans dismissing any critisism first hand here on the board. I have had a number of issues with my macbook and when ever I speak of them I am told that I'm wrong, have mistreated it or that they don't exist.

In fact, that's not about mac. You will find that in every linux community.

I was expecting a good critique of the OS or the hardware, but instead got one man's rage against 1% of Mac users, who happen to frequent forums like this one more so than the other 99%. Wasted my time reading what I already was annoyed at.

Still, hopefully those people will realize why they're annoying, so good find.

I've dealt with 2d and 3d graphics on both platforms. It was only 3 years ago did I make the switch to mac. I was forced to go mac because let's face it, rarely do you see an advertising agency run quark or photoshop on a windows machine.

Despite mastering adobe software and quark on a windows machine, I was being tested for a job position one day and my employers assumed I knew how to work on a mac. I went along with it and didn't say a thing. I just sat down in front of the G5 and pretended to know what the hell I was doing. Hoping all of my hotkeys were there in photoshop and quark only to see there was a loopy key (cmd) and a one button mouse. Oh yeah and the font management system, I thought "wtf is this all about? where's the font folder where I drop fonts into, lol"

Long story short, I've grown to love the macs for their stability and willingness to not fail on me during crunch time.

I never became the loyal fanboi of apple but I do hear it a lot from the hardcore windows gamers out there. Who half the time don't know why mac sucks except that, well... it does suck according to them. The only games I ever played on my macbook pro was world of warcraft and that ran great with all the settings maxed.

I run windows xp through parallels for when the task calls for it.

Not to be a jerk, but......

Their ad boasting the new Intel chips clones the music video for "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service

Does this mean that since I am an engineer at a semiconductor fab that I am cloning The Postal Service?

To this
The Postal Service 6" wafers
Apple's Intel ad 12" wafers.

6" wafers are so 90's. Really though it's not Apple, it is the ad company. I can not remember who did it, but they did the video as well.

That said. I am a proud consumer of Apple products. Apple can create a product that makes me stand up and take notice. I also have a fun time using Apple products. Very few companies do this for me. Moog and Elektron do and I am more then happy to let people know this. Some people do go overboard, but for the most part not. There is nothing wrong with walking down the street wearing a shirt with an Apple logo on it....

I picked up a black macbook about a month ago. Up till now, I've been using Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, 3D studio and many other web/video/photo programs on the PC exclusively in real production environments.

The iPhone is what got me to buy the macbook - it's just plain sexy. The biggest thing that kept me from using a mac were the mac fans. The *angry* mac fans. I've been told by strangers and friends alike about how it *never* crashes and simply works instead of displaying a "blue screen of death" 24/7. Not the case, but that's what they believe.

While I love my new macbook, it still freezes/crashes on occasion and has problems just like the PC. It's a computer. I still use xp/vista for my primary development environments, but I'm also very happy with my new mac.

i think the worst thing about macs is the stupid symbals they use that make it impossible to remember keyboard short cuts.

is it really that tough to just put CTRL on those drop down menus?!?!?!??

oh yeah, and people that think jobs is a genius are pretty annoying too.

I'm not a "fanboy" by any means, but I have to say that Jobs is fairly intelligent. He may not be a "genius" per se (since we don't have access to his IQ), but he is very intelligent. Just like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, etc, Jobs does what he does in his own way and he's very good at it. I think you'd be hard pressed to find another person who could have turned a barely acknowledge computer company into a very successful technology company that delves in music, phones, and tv. A decade ago, no one would have guessed that it would be Apple, and no one would have guessed that Jobs would be the one to do it.

Well' Apple's turnaround since his return and the success of Pixar suggest that he is a genius, but that doesn't make him infallible. He's taken risks and made some mistakes, but if he wasn't a risk-taker, then Apple wouldn't be where it is today.

SOO TRUE!! They're people on this forums with mac license plates!

I have an Apple sticker on my car... so... umm... now what?

I happen to like the product. Is that any worse than wearing a Nike T-Shirt?

That being said... I tend to extoll the virtues of Apple products. When i find a product that has positively impacted my life like the Apple products i've purchased; i want to share with my friends my excitement and recommend them doing the same.

I find the people that take offense or get annoyed tend to be the "anti-fanboy" who immediately dismiss anything created by Apple. If they'd take some time to give a Mac a fair shake... they might find themselves wanting to purchase one. Funny... that's what happened to me...

Yes, i used to be a Mac hater. I had a "fanboy" show me his Mac, i drank the cool-aid, and now i have an Apple sticker on my car. When i purchase my next car, it'll be the first accessory installed. :D

The problem is that this isn't the worst thing about Macs this is a common pattern among people who spend top dollar for excellent products. I know some of the same type of people who swear up and down that SUN Microsystems puts out the only real computer and that Solaris is the world's most perfect operating system. There is an Apple cult indeed but it is there because Apple created a niche market in personal computing just like SUN did in the corporate world. Apple made good choices and has brought to market devices that have put it in the spotlight and while it might annoy some that Apple users tend to be elitists the fact of the matter is that those who use Apple products are allowed to worship Apple because we know how much better Apple is in the personal computer market and the digital media player market and now the cell phone market. Does this mean I only touch Apple computers or I turn a blind eye on Apple, no. I love Open Source and so I run Linux and being a UNIX major I love the fact that OS X has that UNIX backbone and while the OS isn't Open Source it is much cheaper than even some of the Enterprise level Linux distros and of course cheaper than Vista.

Does Microsoft copy everything from Apple, no they don't copy everything but they have tried to throw Apple off the fact of the personal computer universe and they have failed and the market for Apple, while still not the biggest chunk of the market share, is going stronger than ever at this current time. Is Apple forgiven for everything? No. We need 3rd party support on the iPhone and Flash for the iPhone and we need the iPhone unlocked so other service providers can offer it. These are indeed complaints that I have but the fact of the matter is I am willing to deal with it because I know in the end I am using the best products.

Haha. Yes. There are quite a few on this forum. Make even the slightest criticism about an Apple product and they'll jump all over you like hungry lions and insist that it's 100% perfect, and you're absolutely EVIL for even suggesting something could be improved.

What's that? You'd quite like to see MMS on the iPhone? HOW DARE YOU!! Nobody uses MMS, ever. Go wash your mouth out with soap, and say "Hail Jobs" 3 times.

Realism for me. If I think something is good, I'll say so, and if it's bad I'll still say so. Also if I think something is unlikely to happen through logical reasoning (e.g. mid range tower), I'll argue that one too. But fanboyism? Nah. Makes you go blind.

Although everything has its zealots especially in technology, the difference with Apple is the sheer number and ferocity of them.

What a bunch of crap.

Where there a well-known products, you get fanboys, zealots and haters.
Same goes for football clubs for example. "What I hate most about Man Utd are those fans". "They worship everything Sir Alex Ferguson says". etc.

I have a Mac license plate.

And I think Leopard is a piece of ****.

Where do I fit in?

This thread feels like an attempt to draw out the "anti-mac-fanboi fanbois".

Job well done. :)

A geographical oddity
WTF?

The worst thing about a product being other users of said product seems a valid enough complaint when you produce reviews and get inundated with hate mail. But for the average user, if that's the worst part of your experience - isn't that a good thing? I'd love it if the worst thing about my PB was other Mac users, my printer was other HP users, my car was other Honda owners. Instead each has other issues, mostly minor, that are bothers. I'd love to have my individual experience be so perfect that other users were the only problem.

I get the article, not most of the comments.
