When i got my eMac 3 years ago, the Macintosh platform was still a bit of a 'sin' in the world. People would say, ew you have a Mac?!? I wouldn't go to the point of arguing with them about PC vs. Mac but in the back of my mind Apple always had the edge due to the superior operating system. I will agree, however, the hardware wasn't near as good as the PC world. My eMac had a 1.25GHz G4, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD, 17" CRT, Combo Drive, and ATI Radeon 9200 32MB. A similar Dell would have had at least a 2.4GHz Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, maybe a DVD burner, and 17" LCD. Yet, i was paying for the software at the time. Plus, my eMac was a very good looking computer.
I use Windows on a daily basis. People have been complaining about Vista from day one, and I have to say it has been pleasant for me. None of the issues that seemed to plague people in the beginning have effected me. I also think the early adopters have the most issues. I was running Panther 10.3.9 6 months after Tiger came out. When I did upgrade to Tiger, most of the kinks had been worked out and it was a smooth upgrade for me. I didn't upgrade to Vista immediately, but once I did the problems had been solved. Is Vista better than XP? Absolutely. Is it better than Tiger, or for that matter Leopard? No where close. But I think the Windows hating on these boards is taken to an extreme. I have been using XP for 5 years and never had a virus, or any kind of major spyware that would slow the system down. I defrag every couple of weeks and that helps keep the system running great. Along with scanning for both viruses and spyware, my system is clean and has been that way for 6 months.
Now (for the most part), there can be no more arguing about the hardware. The new Intel Mac's have come along way from their predecessors. Now it's hard to configure a Dell tower with similar specs compared to a 20" iMac. The only negative I can say is that Apple hasn't been keeping up with the video card options. The HD2600Pro in the iMac is mediocre at best, same with the X1600 in my iMac. But then again, I don't game on my Mac. But it would be nice to have a higher end graphics card when booting into Boot Camp to play my games.
I'm not a fanboy, but I do get very excited when a new product is announced and watch pretty much all the keynotes. It's nice to see Apple reinvent with products like the iPhone, the magsafe power adapters, and the all-in-one iMac's.
