So my 12-year-old daughter's 7th generation iPad (aka her Roblox and YouTube machine) has given up the ghost. It won't restore, and all the error codes point to a hardware issue. It's $249 to replace it via Apple. Or a new 9th gen is on sale for $429. She needs at least 128GB.

I'm also looking at 8th gen new or refurbished models on eBay.

That's a shame as the 7th gen isn't that old yet

If you can really really wait (but expect long delivery times) you could opt to go for the 10th gen. If not you could buy a 9th gen which is excellent. it'll be 256 GB storage though as the iPad 9 now starts with 64 GB space

Right. I have the 9th gen. Her 7th gen was mine. She gets the hand-me-downs. So if we went with the 10th gen, it'd be for me and she'd get my 9. Can't spoil her!

She still has a phone to communicate and participate with her friends and peers? If „yes”, wait for the 10th. 🙂🙃

Yea she’s 12 but also has a MacBook Air, iPhone SE and Apple SE. Like I said, I don’t want to spoil her

Well, in that case, you can give her your 9th Gen right away and pick up the 10th Gen for yourself when it’s available. Surely, you would put your daughter’s interests/benefit/wellbeing before your own.

Plot twist: my wife also has a 9th gen that she almost never uses unless we’re traveling. So we’re going to repurpose that for my daughter until the Sept event and then reevaluate. I’m hoping my wife realizes that she hasn’t missed it. But if she does, she’ll get my 9 and I’ll get the 10.

See, I always win in the end ;-)

So, to put it differently, you are putting your interests above that of your wife’s. I say that because you said you are “hoping [your wife] realizes she hasn’t missed it”, which suggests that even though “she almost never uses it unless [she is] travelling”, she might miss it, and the fact that you appear to be gleeful about “always [winning] in the end” even if the folks you are winning against are your daughter and wife.

But hey…whatever works for you, I guess.

what is the 10th? I don't see any new iPad rumors for the 10th?

also this is off-topic per this specific thread, but I'm waiting on an iPad Pro and it's interesting that Apple has never announced an iPad Pro in the same month. It's been November (2015), June (2017), October (2018), March (2020), April (2021).

My wife doesn’t care about this stuff. That’s why it’s funny.

Further plot twist: I found a factory sealed 8th generation 128GB on eBay, with a bunch of accessories…listed for $250, and I won the bid at $290.

That’s a good middle ground — saves me $150 on a similar 9th gen, and at least $200 on a presumed 10th gen.

As long as it runs Roblox and YouTube, she’ll be fine for several years.

Thanks all!

Apple updates the low-cost iPad every year like clockwork since 2017.
