So no airpods 2 yesterday - wondering whether to go ahead and buy the current airpods or wait indefinitely (maybe for this rumored october event??)

I think your confused. AirPods have not been scrubbed from Apples website. AirPower however has.
I would try to get a little bit off i.e. find a sale but whenever is a good time to buy

I would wait until the October event if you can... that said though I have been waiting for a year now 
I’ll be buying the new ones when they come out, but not for any new features. I was a day 1 buyer and the batteries have degraded a lot.
I got the left one replaced a few weeks ago and there’s a huge difference in battery life between the left and right now.

I’d buy now especially if they can be found at $145. I’ve had mine since launch and they are, in my opinion, the best Apple product to come out post Steve Jobs. And I think they are under priced at $159!
Besides, given the rumors and Apple’s recent track record, I expect adding wireless charging, hey Siri and official waterproof features with increase the base price. I note, the AirPods are quite durable now. My wife has washed one of her twice and it still works.

Get them now. Holiday season is around the corner and they will be hard to find again. I dont see the Airpods 2 coming out until next September.
Waiting for a vaporware product? If you need (want) them, get them now. If you don't, then wait until you do, then buy what's available.
I don’t know. Buying 2 year old tech sounds a little weird to me. I don’t think I’ll buy them because there’s the chance that the new air pods will be substantially better than the previous like with water proof, better sound, and battery life. I don’t think I want to miss an update like that. But then again there are always great reviews about the current airpods, so I’m itching to click the buy button.
Unless you are going swimming with your Airpods the current ones are water proof enough. As far as sound quality, I doubt Apple will do anything with them. Battery life is good as is IMO. If they decided to come out with Airpods 2 I will move up only if they offer them in Black.
Is there a reason you're favoring AirPods? The Jabra 65ts are getting great reviews and seem to sound better, and the only thing you're missing out on over AirPods is the W chip that allows for the fancy connection. If you don't mind an extra touch to open the Bluetooth menu, there are options that might be better than AirPods.
Also, Sennheisers got some coming out in a month and a half. They definitely looked interesting. I came *this* close to buying the Master & Dynamic ones that just came out, but the battery life is crap and they use the old bluetooth connection, which seems way outdated now.
