Hi

I was wondering if MobileMe is worth it for the good online email service and disk space alone? What do you think?

I am thing about it because at sixth form I need to access my some particular home mac files, and have easy access to my email. They use PCs at school.

You may find that MobilMe doesn't work all that well on a PC. I have not tried it myself but there has been a lot of negative feedback about it on this site and others.

I've been using it since day one pretty much, and although it was pretty buggy and unreliable early on, it's much more stable now, and I haven't had any issues fir a good few months. It runs very smoothly on my work PC (XP & Firefox), and on my mac & iPhone (syncing reliably, consistently).

I find the iDisk very handy for storing important docs etc., and I use QuickOffice MobileFiles Pro on my iPhone for accessing them on the go (recommend this app highly, there's a free version that doesn't have the email or spreadsheet editing functionality).

I've got a fairly complex setup for syncing, with my personal, race events & football fixture calendars syncing from iCal on my mac to MobileMe and my iPhone, and also syncing to google calendar (via BusySync) for an app I'm currently beta testing. I also sync my work exchange calendar to my iPhone and have had no issues with conflicts or reliability.

I was on the free trial initially which Apple ended up extending to 90 days in all after they had all the initial teething problems. Then I decided to stick with it and ended up paying for a family pack subscription, and am personally very happy with the service.

I get the impression that generally speaking, most users no longer have many issues, but there are still a few that still have problems. Check the Apple discussion forums fir more opinions.

As a Windows User it seems there a lot more complaints from Mac Users. Maybe because this is a Mac Forum. The Outlook Syncing has always worked great for me. I also define MobileMe Email to Outlook with IMAP and have never had any problems.

I was thinking more of the problems with accessing MobileMe email on IE6, since the OP said he needs to access his email on the PCs at his school.

Like I said, though, I've never had to try to use any of the services on a PC, so I can't speak from personal experience.

I have and will continue to use MobileMe, but I personally find that Gmail and DropBox kick the crap out of MobileMeMail and iDisk.

Thats just silly. A more reasonable statement would be: G-mail and DropBox are good alternatives if you don't want many features, or ways to access.

????

How can you access MobileMe mail in a way you can't access Gmail? What features does MobileMe Mail have that Gmail doesn't?

Same questions for DropBox. I can have the exact same drop box on Windows and Linux machines with the files mirrored locally, and I don't get constant annoying syncing errors from DropBox like I do from iDisk.

I've used all 4 and I still think Gmail > MobileMeMail and DropBox>iDisk. These are my opinions of course.

What I *love* about MobileMe is how easy it is to get a web page up with iWeb, and to share photos and movies from iMovie or iPhoto with my friends and family. For me, that is worth the cost of MobileMe.

I'll second this, although there are caveats:
  • Gmail doesn't have push email. However, you can get free push email services from elsewhere. (And, you can get selective push email if you use gmail with a separate push email service.)
  • Dropbox only gives you 2GB for free (but I think Dropbox is much more usable than iDisk). That's still plenty for most people, but your only other choice is to pay $99 for 50GB. This is a good deal if you can use most of the 50GB, but it's problematic, otherwise.

It does - it uses IMAP idle which works beautifully on my N95 8GB. As stated in another thread if it doesn't work on the iPhone that's Apple's fault.
