I'm selling my Macbook Pro, and going back to the 24" iMac. I used to have a 24" Aluminum, but got rid of it due to the fact that I needed something portable for school.

Well, schools over, and I've got an offer for $2,200 on my MBP and I plan on taking it. When school does start back up, I'll probably just get a Macbook since it can handle the basics.

I'm not a heavy user at all, but I do use Photoshop quite a bit, and have started to get into Final Cut.

My question is this:

I was thinking about buying the 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme iMac from Apple [refurbished], but due to the backlight bleed/gradient issue I'm really hesitant. I wouldn't want to purchase it, have it get here, and then be extremely frustrated because the screen is so bad. I called my local apple store and asked what they could do if this happened, but they didn't suggest much. Would it be worth it to make this purchase?

Just looking for some opinions, ideas, comments, anything. Let me know, thanks.

I've had my 2.8 C2E for about a month now and I haven't had any problems whatsoever. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought only the 20" iMacs had the bleed/gradient issues? I haven't really heard much wrong about the 24" models :)

No it appears to be a problem with both, but depends a lot on how critical/sensitive a user you are. Some people make it sound like the displays are utter shoite, some see minor imperfections, some are happy. Viewing for yourself is the only answer. The 24" iMacs I've seen recently have looked fine i.e no obvious gradient, no obvious bleed under normal use. The 20" iMacs I've seen have had obvious top-bottom brightness gradient, plus the usual TN panel colour limitations. But I haven't noticed any obvious backlight bleed.

Hey thanks for the advice. I am definitely an 'ocd' type person when it comes to imperfections, especially expensive computers.

I think I'm just going to try and look for a 24" G5 iMac w/ 2.16GHz, 1GB [or more] and the 7600GT 256mb GPU. Or would the 128 not really make a difference? I know Apple has the 128mb model refurb for $1,199.

Let me know, thanks!
