I’m hanging on by a thread waiting for the X 6.5”. A replacement screen and battery for my 6 is about $30 on eBay and it would be nice to have a backup. Is it worth it or would I be throwing money away by cracking it open and putting in questionable quality eBay parts? Anyone DIY repair their iPhone this way?

If it were me I go via my insurance if I was able to. Each insurance firm has its terms etc but if I could I’d go that route and at least that way you’d get Apple authentic parts. (I’d hope!)

Next thing to consider is would you realistically fall back to that device often? Would it be for the 1 or 2 weeks whilst newer device is repaired should the worst happen? I guess only you can judge! How long has your 6 been like this?

Lots of folks successfully repair their own iPhones. $30 to replace the screen and battery is a great price if the parts you get off eBay are any good and you can do the work yourself. The 6 is still a good phone and would make a nice backup for when you buy a new iPhone.

The important question to ask before deciding is whether you'd find your old phone useful after you've purchased the newer one.

There are actually sellers who provide good replacement parts in both Amazon and eBay. Once they've restored their devices, they'd sell it too or use it as a backup. I'd personally think that restoring your 6 is a great idea as having a backup phone is necessary.
