I've had this machine for close to nine years and the hard drive finally crapped out. Is it worth trying to salvage the machine by replacing the hard drive? It ran great other than that. If so, what OS do you recommend?

I'd take the money and put it towards something new.
A lot of very nice improvements since then.

BTW, I own a late-2006 white Intel iMac that's still going. Although the internal drive is ok, I now boot and run it from an external drive most of the time. It's not my "main machine", however, and sees light usage these days...
