So with the recent announcement of apple silicone MacBooks. Is it worth upgrading from my still very capable iPad Pro 2018 11“ to a MacBook? Or is it still to early to tell?

ive been pondering switching back to a MacBook for quite some time now. i miss the laptop/notebook experience as a whole. But I’ve been out of the game since I switched from my MacBook pro to my current iPad.

what benefits of having a macbook hold I have over and iPad? I’m no power user and simply use the iPad for social and media viewing. So keep with ipad or make the switch? i don’t need a Mac and iPad so what will I miss From ipad on a Mac?

Ultra mobility, if that.

You are going from an 11 inch screen to a 13 inch screen. It seems like you win more with the MacBook air and its cheaper (iPad Pro + magic keyboard + pencil) . The standard comes with 256gb. You lose the portability and the use of the pencil. Ideally you can sell the iPad pro to help pay for the new air or keep it and have the best of both worlds, you can easily sidecar to the ipad Pro.

Two rather different devices. I have a motorcycle, but should I get a car? What are the key differences?

At the end of the day: order a MacBook if you’re interested, Apple has even an extended return period now until past Christmas if I remember that correctly.

I’d say stick with the iPad, as the MacBook will offer no practical benefits for your use. However, if you miss the experience of a laptop, I’d highly recommend the magic keyboard. At first I was so reluctant to get it myself because of the price point, but it really does give more of a laptop experience on the iPad and ultimately was worth it to me as I’m much more productive when it comes to typing tasks. That way you’d truly have the best of both worlds.

For your stated usage, there’s almost nothing you would miss about an iPad except maybe the size and portability. If all you do is social media and watch videos on your iPad, the new MacBooks will be excellent. I’d get the Macbook Air which doesn‘t have a fan and would probably feel most iPad-like.

A Macbook and iPad are very different machines with different use cases. If you have a use for desktop programs and a true desktop/folder/application structure then it's certainly worth consideration. Bigger screen too. Do you need to sell the iPad to fund the MacBook? If not then it's a simple answer: Keep both. Use the iPad for social media and other media content, and use the computer for the workload and desktop applications.
