Worth upgrading from Imac to mini ??

I have a 27" imac 2.8 i5 (2010 yr.), and this model does not have thunderbolt or usb3.0 technology. I am a photographer and use lightroom and aperture and was wanting to keep most of the pics on external hd, therefore wanting faster than usb 2.0. So for me, is the mini a viable upgrade with newer tech than the imac?

Yes, it would be a viable upgrade with the faster connections. As long as you can live without a GPU then it should be a great choice. Keep in mind that the transfer increases should be around 3x faster due to the fact that HDDs do not come close to saturaturating USB 3.0 bandwidth.

I'd also look at upgrading the internal HDD on your current machine, which may be suitable depending on your space needs. It would be more cost effective than a new mini and internal SATA connections are plenty fast for modern disks.

i would not get a mini. you may want a newer iMac . the mini is light years behind your machine gpu wise and screen wise. maybe a 2011 iMac with a fast external would work better.
