As the title says, it it worth upgrading from the 5 to 8 by trading it in? My 5 works fine, but it’s starting to work on its last legs - many random restarts, battery is starting to get bad, and there’s some lag. Is it worth upgrading? The thing is, if I don’t, the iPad 5 might stop working altogether and not be able to trade it in, or if I wait too long the trade in might still work but the value go down. There’s also the 9th gen iPad coming soon, is it worth waiting for that? Waiting for the 9th might not be a bad idea; my 5 still works. I’m just saying that if I DONT buy the 8, the trade-in value could go down.

You mainly get 3 improvements for that upgrade. A9 to A12 and 9.7” to 10.2” and 2GB RAM to 3GB. That’s pretty much it.

the extra gig of ram and the newer processor will make a significant performance difference.

the rest is up to you to decide if it’s worth it.

Just get the iPad 8 while you still can.

I'm a 5 owner, and not worth it for me. It's still plenty fast, runs the latest iPadOS, excellent display, and I like the 9.7" form factor. But if your battery is showing issues and unexplained restarts occurring, yes time to consider upgrade especially for trade-in value while it's still working (as you mentioned). I would try to hold out for the 9 though, if possible.

But before giving up on it, I would do a reset and complete software OS reinstall. You never know as the OS may have gotten corrupted and caused some of the flakey issues you're seeing.

Yeah, I think I’ll do that. Wait for the 9, and by then if it’s working fine, I won’t trade in, if it’s barely working, then I’ll trade it in for the 9th gen. Thanks everyone!
