Previously, there was an issue about battery drainage whenever people upgrade their ios on their iphones.
How can you tell this doesn't happen to macOS?
I'm on BigSur 11.1.
Is it worth updating to 11.6?
Any battery drainage?

Big Sur 11.1 - way out dated. Present version 11.6. Caution if moving up - Big Sur 11.5.2 is the last Full Version appearing on the Apple Apps Store and a requirement before 11.6 will download and install.

Battery issues - not on MBA M1. Had the machine since March 2021 - only 6 Full Battery Cycles thus far.

There will be always some kind of battery drainage after performing updates - regardless whether its iOS or macOS as it will trigger a spotlight reindex which might take some time depending on how much data is on your device. During that indexing, enery consumption is typically higher than normal and you'll see a higher battery drainage.
