I understand that the new iphone and ipod touch may change to accept up to 180 apps. Does anyone reckon that there is a chance of that increasing to 200 instead? There are so many great apps coming on to the market now and I just don't want to remove any!!!

As a developer (and user) the more apps the better!

But just like in the App Store, the key is ORGANIZATION. I just handed down my original iPhone to my mom (Happy Mother's Day!) and had to explain the pages of apps. I tried to put all the ones she'd want on the home page, but there really needs to be a way to organize screens, i.e. custom labels, like Arcade Games, Social Networking, etc., with quick access.

Until then, and since it's not in 3.0 beta, I would be surprised to see more app pages.

Really?? Oh no. I thought there would be added pages in the new release. In fact, I read in a few places that it would be upped to 11 pages.

This is a real bummer for people like me, who have loads of apps. I am approaching 1000. No, that's not a typo.

How many of those do you actually use in a week?

Some I try, and I know I will never access again (like Catch the Egg, what a stupid app). Some others I go back to, time and again: my comfort apps. It's not really about using them, for me. Often, I buy them because they're on sale and I'm taking advantage of that by purchasing it then.

Also, I have a "collector's personality". It's about having them available.

Users with jailbroken phones are probably familiar with Categories. It basically allows users to create folders to put apps in. If Apple included an application like this, all problems would be solved. It is also much more convenient than scrolling through 9 pages of apps.

I delete apps on a daily basis. I can't wait for more room, but I know it will not be enough. I have a list of deleted apps that are not installed that is longer than the new amount of space.

I also really wanted to see a new management set up. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for some kind of folders. I could access all my apps essentially one level down from the first screen, which would be just about 100x better.

I think it is one of the biggesgt short-comings in the current UI design. The menu interface is very clunky and cumbersome. I was really hoping the earlier rooms that it was being updated were true.

If you could have folders it means you could have 16 primary folders if you did not have any in the quick pick boxes. Of those you could have 16 more apps on the first page of each folder.

That is 256 apps that would be available within just two screen touches of the main screen.

What's the point of posting such a useless coment Noah82?
Looks like I'm not the only one keen to have more apps.
Cheers guys!
So now we just have to hope that an Apple designer sees the thread and gets to work on it soon!
Here's hoping anyways!!

Categories is better in theory than in practice. I jailbroke my iPhone specifically for stuff like Categories, and while it was cool for a while, it just wasn't integrated enough into the Springboard. Specifically, I would tap on a folder to go to an app. Then I would run the app, quit to the Springboard, then go back to the same folder, run another app, lather, rinse, repeat. It was just too clunky for my usage because the time it would take to get back into the folder wasn't brief (even if I kept the folder resident in memory).

Then the next challenge was the firmware updates. After a jailbreak update, all of the folders as well as the app icons would be missing. So, then I'd have to reinstall Categories. Then, I'd have to recreate all the folders and then try to remember which icons went where. Even with the jailbreak backup utility, I never got these settings back.

So...the idea of Categories is great, but the implementation didn't do it for me personally. It would be fantastic if Apple implemented some kind of app organization. The iPhone really needs it!

P.S. I'm off the jailbreak for now. It was just more trouble than it was worth to me.

Organization will be less important if Spotlight works well on fw 3.0. I currently use Quickgold on my JB phone. Searching for apps is quick and it keeps track of the last 6 apps I've launched. That's about as many as I use at a time on pages 2-9. All other useful apps are on the home screen and dock.

"To each their own"

I, too, would like to have the capability of adding more apps.

For those that think it's silly, how many songs do you have on your iphone? How many do you listen to every day?

simple solution, two devices

I keep a hundred apps on my iPhone and a hundred on my Touch. I can completely run down the battery playing games on my Touch, and still have a full charge for 3G internet and phone calls.

I too would love to see more app spots, I am sick of having to see which one will get deleted today so I can make room for another. I realize that you can redownload them again, but its a pain to have to reset up everything.

I agree that Categories has some problems, but if a program very similar to Categories was developed by Apple for use specifically with the iPhone and iPod Touch, it could work very well. Especially with the bumped speeds that have been rumored for the new iPhone.

List 200 apps that you use on a daily basis. DO IT.

I already know that you cannot.

Do you even have 200 apps on your computer?

I absolutely have 200 executables on my computer, especially if it's a Unix (MacOS X) box.

Remember, not all "apps" are the equivalent of Photoshop or Microsoft Office. Textedit and Calculator, come to mind. Also, the original poster was ASKING FOR 200. The limitation is 148 and that includes bundled apps, leaving 129 spots. Check out http://www.148apps.com/about/

It's quite easy to fill up the pages. Plus it would be nice to have categories so you can easily organize the apps, no matter how many you have.

I have several movie listing apps, because some are better at somethings than others. Same w/ news, weather, etc. Dozens of grown up games plus games for the kids. Dozens of math quiz apps for my kids.

As a developer, I'd love to see users be able to use more apps :D

Yes, the 3.0 beta does increase the limit to 11 pages and yes, folders is really clunky. I prefer a combination of poof+quick gold for me which is much quicker and easier. And honestly, there are more then 200 good apps in the store. There are. In fact, I have nine pages filled and I don't own 90 percent of the top 100, only one-2 free apps, one EA app(NFSU), two gameloft games, no digital choclate games, two chillingo games, no RPG or MMO apps, and less then 10 "app" apps. So yes, I don't see why apple only allows that many but yes, the device will slow down greatly and it will be clumsly to get to page 11. That's why spotlight will be great. Now apple needs to have a organizational type thing then I am good.
