My AirPort Extreme base has gone tits up so my 'wirelessness' has gone. I have a spare Sky Broadband Netgear wireless router. If I plugged my Virgin Media Cable Modem into the netgear router do you think it would work and give me back my 'wirelessness'. That way I dont have to stump up for a new Airport Base just yet.

BTW: I cant try it yet because I'm not at home. :p

Does the Sky router have an ethernet WAN port for you to plug your Virgin modem in to?

Is the router really just a D-Link with a stick on it or something? (oh so it's Netgear, helps when I read :p) Is it configurable or locked with Sky DSL settings?

Oh crap! No it doesnt. I forgot its done through the phoneline so you dont get a WAN port just a frickin phone port and 4 ethernet ports.

Cheers

time for a time capsule! ;)

Stop it! :D

I called Virgin Media to see if they would send me a free wireless router/modem because I've been with them for years (10 I think) but they said I would have to buy one. Hows that for loyalty being rewarded?

You must have been about 3/4 up their rating as a loyal customer. I heard that people that pay their bill each month without trouble will be disconnected next month. ;)

You may find this explanation useful:

I've heard that it may be possible to use a typical[1] wireless
ADSL modem/router to connect to a cable modem, but only
by using a LAN port. Doing it that way would deprive you of
some of the router's functionality, e.g., the firewall.

[1] Your router may be non-typical :)

lol.

good point, infrared... but most routers here are too cheap to customise that much, unless replacing with custom firmware.

what model is yer netgear, boobs?

Yeh. Its typical my router is non typical!

Model number (I think) is 0681. I doubt it has infrared because its a router sent out when you connect with the Sky service so its going to be the cheapest thing going.
