Would an HDMI switcher make life easier?

I'm already running two 27" monitors on my Mac mini. Sometimes I like to show video on a nearby wall-mounted TV. Currently I have to pull the HDMI cable from one of the monitors and move it to the TV. My thought is to use an HDMI switcher to eliminate the need to move HDMI cables to and fro.

The HDMI switchers I've looked at all seem designed to switch multiple HDMI sources into one HDMI port of a TV. I want to do the opposite -- output and switch one HDMI source (the Mac mini) between multiple devices.

Can anyone see any reason why this wouldn't work?

Why not just buy an AppleTV? You can mirror or extend your display wirelessly.

As for your original question, no it isn't shouldn't be an issue. you might have to go with a matrix splitter if you want to choose when to output. Otherwise you are looking for an active hdmi splitter. The splitter will always output to both though.

I already have Apple TV connected to that TV. I repeat: Huge :facepalm:

I'm fairly new to 10.10 and still working out what's changed since 10.6. Thank you for opening my eyes to yet another undiscovered feature. I've worked out how to mirror either one of the current monitors over to the TV.

I'm sure glad the price just dropped because now I want another Apple TV for the downstairs TV.

Might want to make sure the apple tv is connected via a LAN cable. I still get stuttering when I am connected wirelessly and I have bluetooth turned on. Its a pain.

I've never had a problem with AirPlay. Very good wifi network and a good LAN will do you some good. May want to make sure your wifi isn't running on a channel with the rest of your dorm mates...

I know you figured something else out, but if you want to do this, look for a HDMI splitter. They are widely available and cheap, a one in four out goes for about $20.
